Chapter 6

Daniel had always treated no as an opening offer.

No, I don’t want to go.

You’re being antisocial.

No, don’t speak to me like that.

You’re too emotional.

No, Sophie is sleeping.

She’s my daughter too.

No, I won’t sign that.

Then you’ll explain to a judge why you’re unstable.

By the time Clara stood in Evelyn’s chambers, she had said no more times in her head than aloud.

That was part of the damage.

Daniel had not only controlled what she did.

He had trained her to rehearse resistance privately and surrender publicly.

Now he was losing because the room would not bend around him.

Evelyn did not argue like Clara.

She did not plead.

She did not explain enough for him to twist it.

She gave him short sentences with legal edges.

Daniel hated that.

He took one step closer to the desk.

Evelyn lifted one hand.

“Stop.”

He stopped.

The obedience shocked even him.

Clara saw it and understood something painful.

Daniel could control himself.

He always could.

He simply chose not to when he thought the person in front of him had no power.

Evelyn lowered her hand slowly.

“Now listen carefully. You are going to stand where you are. You are going to keep your hands visible. And you are going to stop addressing the child directly.”

Daniel’s face reddened.

“You have no right to silence me as a father.”

Evelyn’s eyes turned colder.

“I am not silencing you. I am inviting you to continue on speaker.”

The phone sat between them like a witness with perfect memory.

Daniel looked at Clara.

His voice dropped.

“Do you understand what you’re doing to this family?”

Clara’s breath shook.

For years, that question had worked.

It made her think of holidays, neighbors, Sophie’s preschool, Daniel’s reputation, Evelyn’s age, money, court costs, headlines, shame.

Now she looked at her daughter’s trembling hands.

“Yes,” Clara said.

Daniel blinked.

She continued, “I’m ending the part where you call fear a family.”

Evelyn’s expression did not change, but Clara saw pride flicker in her eyes.

Daniel saw it too.

That made him reckless.

He pointed toward Clara.

“You think she can protect you? I know people in this building.”

Evelyn’s gaze shifted to the phone.

“Names, Counselor.”

Daniel froze.

The trap had opened politely.
