Chapter 2 - The Curtain Opens

Margaret Reed did not look angry first.
She looked afraid.
That was what Daniel noticed.
Her hand gripped the first-class curtain so tightly the fabric twisted between her fingers. Her modest travel sweater was wrinkled from the overnight flight, her hair slightly flattened from the economy headrest, her face pale beneath the soft cabin lights.
She stared at Ava.
Then at Sophie.
Then at Daniel.
“Ava,” she repeated, lower this time. “Give him the baby.”
Ava did not move.
Sophie slept against her chest as if the teenager’s heartbeat was the only safe sound on the aircraft.
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Do you know her?”
Margaret looked at him too fast.
“No.”
Ava’s jaw tightened.
Daniel saw it.
So did the woman with the champagne glass.
So did the flight attendant standing near the aisle.
The lie had arrived too quickly to survive.
Daniel looked from Margaret to Ava.
“You said Reed.”
Margaret’s lips parted.
Ava whispered, “Don’t.”
It was not clear who she was warning.
Daniel.
Margaret.
Herself.
The plane trembled lightly through turbulence, and Sophie shifted in Ava’s arms. Ava immediately adjusted her hold, supporting the baby’s head with instinctive care.
Daniel saw that too.
No fear of the baby.
No awkwardness.
No need for instruction.
Ava knew how to hold a child who was scared.
Margaret stepped forward.
“Ava, you are making this worse.”
Ava’s eyes filled, but her voice stayed steady.
“No. I made her stop crying.”
Daniel turned slightly toward Margaret.
“And that scares you?”
Margaret’s face folded around panic.
“You don’t understand.”
Daniel almost laughed, but nothing about it was funny.
His daughter had screamed for hours.
A stranger had comforted her in minutes.
That stranger’s last name had reopened something he had buried with his wife.
And the woman from economy now looked as if the wrong door had opened in midair.
He straightened.
“Then explain it.”
Margaret looked at the passengers.
Too many witnesses.
Too much light.
Too little room to control the story.
May you like
She said nothing.
