Chapter 7 - The Seat Beside the Baby

The flight attendant brought a blanket.

Ava accepted it with one hand while keeping Sophie secure with the other.

Daniel watched her tuck the blanket around the baby carefully, avoiding her face, supporting her neck, checking her breathing without anyone instructing her.

“You’ve done this before,” he said.

Ava shook her head.

“Not with her.”

The answer carried too much meaning.

Margaret flinched.

Daniel looked at her.

“With who?”

Ava’s face went still.

Margaret stepped forward quickly.

“That is enough.”

Sophie’s eyes opened.

Not crying.

Just watching.

She stared at Ava with a calm Daniel had not seen all night.

Then she turned her head slightly toward him.

Daniel reached one finger toward her.

This time, Ava did not pull back.

Sophie touched his finger.

Daniel’s face broke.

For three hours, the baby had twisted from him in exhaustion and panic. Now, while held by Ava, she allowed him close.

It felt like being forgiven by someone too young to know the word.

Ava watched the exchange.

Her expression softened.

“She knows your voice,” she said.

Daniel looked up.

“She screamed every time I used it.”

“Because you sounded scared.”

He almost smiled through pain.

“I was.”

“I know.”

That simple answer struck him.

Ava did not judge fear.

She understood it.

Margaret looked toward the curtain, then the aisle, then the passengers.

She was calculating again.

Daniel saw it.

“Don’t take her away.”

Margaret stiffened.

“She is my responsibility.”

Ava’s eyes lowered.

Responsibility.

Not daughter.

Not child.

Not family.

Daniel caught the word.

“What is she to you?”

Margaret’s face went blank.

Ava hugged Sophie closer.

The question had landed where the story did not yet allow an answer.

No full identity.

No final connection.

No explanation of the late wife.

Only silence.

Daniel looked at Ava.

May you like

She looked back with eyes that wanted to trust him and had been taught not to.
