Chapter 5 - Daniel Hears the Name Again

Reed.
The name kept circling Daniel’s mind.
Not loudly.
Not clearly.
Like a song heard through a closed door.
His late wife had never liked certain questions.
Not because she was secretive.
Because some subjects made her withdraw into silence so practiced it seemed older than their marriage.
Reed had been one of those names.
He had heard it only a handful of times.
On a document someone removed too quickly.
In a call his wife ended when he entered the room.
Once in an argument with his mother, behind a study door, when his wife’s voice broke around that word.
He had never pushed hard enough.
That failure now sat beside him in first class, wearing a gray hoodie and holding his sleeping baby.
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“Ava Reed,” he repeated softly.
Ava looked down.
Margaret stepped farther into first class.
“Mr. Whitmore, she is tired. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Ava’s head snapped up.
“I know exactly what I’m saying.”
Sophie stirred at the sharpness.
Ava instantly lowered her voice.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered to the baby.
Daniel watched that apology.
Gentle.
Immediate.
Instinctive.
Margaret’s eyes filled with frustrated fear.
“You promised you wouldn’t do this.”
Ava’s expression cracked.
“I promised I wouldn’t cause trouble.”
“And this is trouble.”
“No,” Ava said, voice trembling now. “This is Sophie.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Still calm.
Still pressed against Ava like she belonged there.
Belonged.
The word frightened him.
“What does Sophie have to do with your promise?” he asked.
Margaret turned away.
Ava’s eyes filled.
She wanted to speak.
Daniel could see it.
But something held her back—not uncertainty, not deception, but the terrible discipline of a girl who had been warned about consequences since childhood.
The flight hit a small pocket of turbulence.
Glasses rattled.
Passengers braced.
Ava tightened her hold around Sophie with perfect care.
Daniel reached out halfway, then stopped.
Ava noticed.
He had not tried to take the baby.
That mattered.
Her voice dropped.
“I wasn’t supposed to come into first class.”
Margaret whispered, “Ava, please.”
Ava looked at Daniel.

“But she wouldn’t stop crying.”
