Chapter 4 - The Backpack With the Pins

Daniel’s eyes moved to Ava’s backpack.
It was patched at the bottom with uneven stitching.
The zipper pull had been replaced with a loop of thread.
Academic competition pins covered one strap: math, robotics, debate, science olympiad, spelling, things earned quietly and carried proudly.
A notebook stuck out from the side pocket.
Its corner was filled with neat equations and small diagrams.
Daniel looked at it, then at Ava.
“Are you traveling alone?”
Margaret answered first.
“No.”
Ava’s mouth tightened.
Daniel kept his eyes on Ava.
“Are you?”
Ava hesitated.
“No.”
It was honest, but not complete.
Margaret took a breath of relief too soon.
Daniel heard that breath.
He had spent his life negotiating with people who thought partial truth was safety. Margaret Reed was carrying a partial truth like a shield.
The flight attendant stepped closer.
“Mr. Whitmore, would you like us to reseat the young lady temporarily?”
Margaret snapped, “No.”
Daniel turned toward her.
The sharpness had betrayed her again.
Ava looked embarrassed.
“She doesn’t need to move me.”
Sophie stirred.
Ava immediately softened her body, rocking once in a small rhythm.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“You can sit here, if you want. Just until Sophie is settled.”
Ava looked toward the empty first-class seat as if it were a trap.
Margaret spoke through clenched teeth.
“She has a seat in economy.”
Daniel did not look away from Ava.
“I asked her.”
Ava swallowed.
That small distinction seemed to reach her in a place words rarely did.
She sat slowly at the edge of the seat, still holding Sophie securely.
Daniel remained standing nearby, not crowding her.
Margaret looked trapped at the curtain.
Passengers watched with restrained fascination.
The woman with the champagne glass finally set it down.
Ava looked at Daniel.
“You really don’t know?”
His breath caught.
“Know what?”
Margaret’s face went white.
“Ava.”
Ava closed her eyes for one second.
When she opened them, she did not answer.
