Chapter 1

Bride Humiliates a Beggar at Her Charity Gala—Then Recognizes Her Fiancé Beneath the Disguise.

Celeste Vale poured hot soup over the ragged man in front of three hundred donors.

The Meridian Grand Hotel ballroom went half silent, half nervous laughter.

The man sat hunched in a torn brown coat, wet tangled hair covering his face, a false gray-streaked beard hiding his jaw.

Soup ran down his scarf and soaked into the filthy fabric.

Celeste leaned closer in her sparkling champagne-silver gown, diamonds shining at her ears.

“People like you should know when to disappear.”

Behind her, Patricia Vale smiled like cruelty was part of the evening program.

The disguised man slowly raised his eyes.

Blue-gray.

Calm.

Observing.

He touched something beneath his scarf.

A tiny light blinked once.

“You’re right.”

Two security officers stepped closer.

Before they could touch him, he removed the soaked scarf.

Then the false beard.

Celeste’s smile collapsed.

He rose, pulled away the ragged coat, and revealed a perfect black tuxedo underneath.

The ballroom froze.

Celeste staggered backward.

“Rafael?”

Rafael Cain pushed away the wet hairpiece and stood in front of her as himself.

Then Mara Chen walked through the stunned crowd carrying his phone and a sealed legal folder.

“The recording has already reached the board.”

Patricia’s smile vanished.

Celeste’s clutch began vibrating again and again.

Rafael took the phone from Mara and looked directly at his fiancée.
