Chapter 5

“People like you should know when to disappear.”

The sentence landed harder than the soup.

Rafael had heard rich people speak carelessly before.

He had heard executives talk about workers like numbers.

Donors talk about poverty like atmosphere.

Politicians talk about housing like a branding opportunity.

But hearing Celeste say those words inside his foundation gala ended something in him.

Not love.

He wanted to see Celeste’s eyes.

Not her dress.

Not her diamonds.

Not the perfect face she gave donors.

“You’re right.”

Celeste blinked.

Something in his tone unsettled her.

Security moved closer, but Rafael lifted one hand calmly.

Then he removed the soaked scarf.

The false beard came away next.

Celeste’s breath caught.

Patricia stopped smiling.

Guests leaned forward.

Rafael stood.

The ragged coat slid from his shoulders.

The black tuxedo beneath it was immaculate.
