Chapter 2

Rafael Cain had not wanted to test Celeste.
That was the part he hated most.
He wanted to marry her.
He wanted to believe the woman who stood beside him at foundation events, smiled at children’s hospitals, and spoke beautifully about dignity meant every word she said.
But money teaches a man one cruel lesson.
People love your generosity until generosity requires them to share power.
Celeste loved the gala.
The cameras.
The donors.
The applause.
The way her name looked beside Rafael’s foundation on embossed invitations.
She called it their future.
Mara Chen called it exposure.
“She has been requesting unusual access,” Mara warned him three weeks before the gala.
Rafael frowned.
“To the foundation?”
“To the foundation, the donor lists, the restricted accounts, and your board communications.”
Celeste said she was only trying to help.
Patricia said Rafael was lucky to have a fiancée “with vision.”
But Mara had worked with Rafael long enough to know the difference between vision and appetite.
So Rafael arranged one final private test in public.
A disguised arrival.
A concealed camera.
A controlled security team.
No violence.
No trap that created cruelty.
Only a mirror.
He entered his own charity gala dressed as the kind of person Celeste claimed to serve.
Ragged coat.
False beard.
Dirty scarf.
A bowl of soup from the service table.
He expected discomfort.
Maybe embarrassment.
Maybe an impatient request for security.
May you like
He did not expect her to pour soup on him.
