Chapter 3

Celeste had always performed kindness well.

That was her gift.

She knew where to place her hand on a donor’s arm.

How to tilt her head when cameras flashed.

How to say “the underserved” as if she had ever sat across from them without a photographer nearby.

Rafael saw the performance.

He also saw the possibility beneath it.

Or thought he did.

When they first met, Celeste volunteered at a winter housing fundraiser.

She wore no diamonds that night.

She held paper cups of coffee and listened to a veteran speak about losing his apartment.

Rafael remembered thinking she was different.

Later, he learned the photographer from her mother’s lifestyle magazine had been there.

He ignored that detail too long.

Patricia encouraged the match from the beginning.

“My daughter has always had a heart for charity,” she told Rafael.

Mara later said, “People who have hearts for charity usually don’t need their mothers to announce it.”

Rafael laughed then.

He did not laugh now.

At the Meridian Grand, Celeste stood beneath chandeliers while donors watched her decide what kind of person she was when she thought no one important sat before her.

The disguised Rafael asked only for a place to sit.

Celeste’s face hardened immediately.

“You can’t be in here.”

“I was told this event was for the city’s housing fund.”

“It is.”

“Then I thought maybe—”

“No.”

Her eyes moved over his coat.

Not with fear.

With disgust.

That was when Rafael knew the test had already begun to end.
