PART 1

“She woke up after the fire, and her father cried that her mother was dead… until the detective leaned in and whispered, ‘Don’t believe him.’”

Emily Carter woke up to bright hospital lights and the smell of antiseptic.

Her arms were wrapped in bandages.

Her legs felt heavy and distant.

Every breath scraped her throat like smoke was still trapped inside her lungs.

For a few seconds, she did not remember the fire.

Then she heard her father crying.

He stood near the foot of her bed in a blue shirt, his face wet, his hands shaking as two officers held him back.

“Emily,” he sobbed.

“Your mother is gone…”

“You’re the only survivor.”

The words landed slowly.

Her mother.

Gone.

Emily tried to sit up, but pain flashed through her body.

A doctor placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“Easy.”

Her father struggled against the officers.

“I need to see my daughter!”

“She needs me!”

Emily looked at him through tears.

He looked destroyed.

Broken.

Like a husband who had lost everything.

Then Detective Hale stepped closer to her bed.

He was older, silver-haired, calm in a way that made the room feel less wild.

He leaned in until only Emily could hear him.

“Don’t believe him.”

“He’s putting on a show.”

Emily froze.

Her eyes moved back to her father.

The crying was still there.

The trembling was still there.

But now she saw something under it.

Rage.

Not grief.

Rage that he was being watched.

Her memory came back in burning pieces.

The smoke alarm screaming.

Her mother pounding on the bedroom door.

The hallway glowing orange.

The back door.

The handle refusing to turn.

Emily’s lips trembled.

“The back door was locked from the outside.”

Detective Hale’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Confirmation.

He turned toward her father.

“His car left eleven minutes before the first 911 call.”

Her father stopped crying.

Completely.

The silence was worse than the sobs.

One officer pulled his arms behind his back.

“Sir, you’re under arrest.”

Emily stared as her father’s face twisted from sorrow into fury.

“You stupid girl,” he hissed.

That was when Emily finally understood.

The fire had not taken her mother by accident.
