The courtroom was full every day of Richard Carter’s trial.

Emily looked at him.
“No memory is perfect.”
“But locks do not open from the outside by themselves.”
The courtroom went silent.
The attorney tried again.
“Your father loved you.”
Emily turned toward Richard.
He finally looked at her.
“No.”
“He loved being seen as a father.”
“That is not the same thing.”
The prosecutor played Laura’s video next.
Laura’s face appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Afraid.
Determined.
Richard lowered his head.
Not in grief.
In defeat.
Then came Dana’s testimony.
The burner phone.
The payout plan.
The message.
Back door handled.

The life policy.
The scheduled email.
By the end, Richard’s performance had nowhere left to stand.
