PART 6

Richard asked to see Emily from county holding.

Hale advised against it.

The doctor advised against it.

Even the nurse who changed Emily’s bandages shook her head and said, “Honey, no.”

Emily said yes.

Not because she forgave him.

Because she needed to see what kind of face a man wore after leaving his wife and daughter in a burning house.

They brought him to a secure hospital interview room two days later.

Emily was rolled in with her bandaged arms resting on pillows.

A glass wall separated them.

Richard looked smaller in custody orange.

But his eyes were the same.

Restless.

Calculating.

He pressed one hand to the glass.

“Emily.”

She said nothing.

He tried tears first.

“I loved your mother.”

Still nothing.

“I made mistakes.”

Nothing.

“I panicked.”

Emily finally spoke.

“You locked the back door.”

His face hardened for one second.

Then the sorrow returned.

“I was trying to keep smoke from spreading.”

Emily almost laughed.

It hurt too much.

“You drove away before anyone called 911.”

“I went for help.”

“There was a phone in the kitchen.”

“The fire was spreading.”

“You told Dana the back door was handled.”

Richard went still.

There it was.

The real man beneath the crying.

“You do not understand what debt does to a person.”

Emily stared at him.

“My mother understood.”

“She kept trying to help you.”

“She kept trying to save the house.”

Richard’s voice sharpened.

“She was going to ruin everything.”

Emily felt something inside her go very quiet.

Not numb.

Clear.

“She was going to leave you.”

Richard looked away.

That was the confession without words.

“She had no right to take my daughter,” he said.

Emily leaned closer to the glass.

“You lost the right to call me that when you locked the door.”

His face twisted.

“I raised you.”

“No.”

“Mom raised me.”

“You performed when people were watching.”

Richard slammed his palm against the glass.

Officers moved instantly.

Emily did not flinch.

That surprised both of them.

She was badly hurt.

Her mother was gone.

Her body was wrapped in pain.

But fear had burned away with the house.

Richard leaned forward, voice low.

“You think Hale can protect you forever?”

Emily looked at the camera in the corner.

Then back at him.

“No.”

May you like

“But Mom already did.”
