Chapter 10

Night gathered around Gray Hollow while we remained inside the damaged house.

No folder opened.

No name spoken.

No confrontation completed.

The truth waited on the table between us, sealed in black leather.

Mason stood outside near the SUVs.

The security team kept their distance.

Inside, Mila arranged three wooden blocks near my shoe.

Leo watched me from behind Elena.

I removed my overcoat and placed it over the back of the broken chair.

The black suit beneath looked too formal for the room.

Too polished.

Too much like the man Elena had been taught to fear.

So I sat on the damaged floor.

Mila looked at me.

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why sit there?”

“Because you are there.”

She considered the answer.

Then pushed one wooden block toward me.

Elena’s eyes filled, but she looked away.

Leo moved closer to his sister.

Not to me.

Not yet.

I picked up the block but did not move beyond the space Mila had allowed.

Elena stood near the window, watching the SUVs through the thin curtain.

“You found us.”

“Yes.”

“Will more people come?”

“Only if you ask.”

She turned.

“You can promise that?”

“I can order it.”

“That is not the same thing.”

She was right.

Power can stop people.

It cannot guarantee safety.

I looked at the twins.

“Then I promise I will not force you or the children to go anywhere.”

Elena studied my face.

“What about the person in that folder?”

My gaze moved toward the sealed black leather.

“I will find the truth.”

“And then?”

The old Marco would have answered with punishment.

He would have described consequences until fear sounded like justice.

But three stolen years had taught me the cost of acting before understanding.

“Then you decide whether I stand beside you.”

Elena’s composure fractured.

One tear moved down her cheek.

Outside, Mason approached the porch again but stopped before reaching the door.

His phone had received another message.

He looked through the opening at me.

Then at Elena.

Whatever he knew remained unspoken.

The conspiracy was still incomplete.

The sister whose shadow hovered over our marriage had not yet been named.

The recordings had not been explained.

The forged documents remained sealed.

No DNA result existed.

No final confrontation waited in the room.

Only a father sitting on a ruined floor while two children studied the face they had inherited.

Mila moved another block toward me.

Leo finally stepped away from Elena’s dress.

One step.

Then another.

He stopped beside his sister and looked directly into my eyes.

The resemblance hurt more at close range.

Elena covered her mouth.

I remained still.

I had spent three years searching for my wife.

I found a family.

But finding them did not mean they belonged to me.

Not yet.

Trust would have to be built in the space left behind by the lies.

Outside, the black SUVs waited beneath the fading Appalachian light.

Inside, the sealed folder remained unopened.

And somewhere beyond Gray Hollow, the person who had designed Elena’s disappearance still believed three years of silence had protected the secret.
