Chapter 9

Elena allowed me inside only after the security team moved back to the SUVs.

Even then, I remained near the doorway.

She seated Mila on the worn sofa and kept Leo beside her.

The twins watched me with identical amber eyes.

No DNA test could have felt more immediate.

But resemblance was not proof.

And I refused to turn children into evidence before they understood who I was.

Mason placed the sealed folder on a damaged wooden table.

He did not open it.

Elena stared at the black seal.

“I received recordings,” she said.

“Of me?”

She nodded.

“Your voice ordered someone to take care of me.”

“I never made that call.”

“I know what I heard.”

“And I know what I said.”

The old wound entered the room between us.

Elena folded her arms.

“There were signatures.”

“Forged.”

“Photographs.”

“Staged or deliberately incomplete.”

“You were with another woman.”

“A federal mediator.”

Elena laughed once without humor.

“Convenient.”

“She was helping create protection for you.”

“Protection from whom?”

I looked toward the folder.

“That is what I need to know.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“You expect me to trust the same system that produced those men outside?”

“No.”

I gestured toward the folder.

“I expect you to decide whether it opens.”

Mason looked at me sharply.

The evidence belonged to Bellini security.

Technically.

But technical control had destroyed enough of our lives.

Elena approached the table.

Her hand stopped above the seal.

Mila climbed down from the sofa and stood beside her.

“Is he our daddy?”

No one moved.

Elena closed her eyes.

I did not answer for her.

Finally, she looked at me.

There was anger in her face.

Grief.

Love she had tried to bury.

And the unbearable question of whether telling the truth would place the children in danger or return something stolen from them.

She lowered her hand without touching the folder.

“Not tonight.”

I nodded.

Mason picked it up again.

The culprit’s name remained sealed.

But for the first time, Elena had not ordered me to leave.
