Chapter 4

Elena reached West Virginia under the name Elena Wells.

Her maiden name.

The documents looked real because they had been created from genuine records.

A valid Social Security number.

A properly issued driver’s license.

A rental history beginning two years before she arrived.

Someone had built a life and waited for her to enter it.

The person who drove Elena out of Illinois told her I had ordered her removal.

He showed her the audio recording.

The financial ledger.

Photographs of my men watching her office.

Then he gave her one instruction.

Disappear before Marco finishes what he started.

Elena did not trust him.

But she trusted what she had seen with her own eyes even less.

Two nights before she vanished, she had entered a private Bellini property and found me embracing a woman in a dark coat.

The woman’s face was turned away.

Elena heard me say, “She cannot know yet.”

She left before hearing the rest.

The woman had been a federal mediator helping me negotiate protection for Elena after threats against her.

At least, that was the explanation I would later remember.

But the scene had been arranged so Elena would arrive at the exact moment most damaging to us.

Fear finished what the evidence began.

She crossed three states before realizing she was pregnant with twins.

By then, every news report in Chicago described her as missing.

Some suggested I had killed her.

Others claimed she had stolen confidential financial records and fled.

Elena considered contacting police.

Then a photograph arrived beneath the door of her motel room.

It showed me standing beside Alessandra at a press conference.

Across the bottom someone had written:

He controls them too.

Elena stopped trusting institutions.

She traveled south.

Then east.

She selected Gray Hollow because it was small, isolated, and barely connected to the systems my people searched.

The twins were born in a rural hospital under protected records.

Mila arrived first.

Leo eleven minutes later.

Both had dark curls.

Both opened amber eyes.

Elena knew immediately that hiding them from me would become harder than hiding herself.

For three years, she survived on translation work, bookkeeping, and cash sent anonymously through channels she never fully understood.

She believed the money came from an advocacy network.

It did not.

Someone wanted her alive.

Hidden.

Dependent.

And afraid enough never to ask why.
