Chapter 7

The SUVs were not supposed to arrive.
I had ordered Mason to remain outside town until I contacted him.
But the team had uncovered something urgent.
Leo heard the engines before I did.
“Mama… the black cars are stopping outside.”
His fingers tightened around Elena’s dress.
She went pale.
In her mind, the vehicles confirmed every warning.
The Bellinis had found her.
Now they would finish what began three years earlier.
I stepped away from the doorway immediately.
Not toward the children.
Toward the road.
My body moved before thought.
I placed myself between the house and the approaching vehicles.
Elena noticed.
Confusion flickered across her face.
The man she feared should have welcomed reinforcements.
Instead, I shielded her from them.
Four SUVs stopped along the narrow street.
Doors opened.
Four members of my security team emerged in dark suits.
No visible weapons.
No aggressive movement.
Mason approached holding a sealed black folder.
His expression told me the discovery was larger than the rental payments.
He stopped at the porch.
“Mr. Bellini, we found who forged Elena’s disappearance.”
The world went still.
Elena’s grip loosened around Mila.
Just slightly.
The sentence did not surprise her completely.
That was what I saw.
Some part of her had always known the evidence was too perfect.
Too carefully timed.
Too professionally assembled.
I looked at the folder.
Black leather.
Security seal unbroken.
A name waited inside.
Maybe one I had loved.
Maybe one Elena had trusted.
Maybe someone who had stood beside me through every year of searching.
Mason did not open it.
He understood the threshold belonged to Elena now.
I turned toward her.
She stared at the folder as though it contained a weapon.
“Did you know?” I asked.
She shook her head.
Then whispered, “I suspected someone watched us.”
“Who?”
Her eyes moved toward the twins.
She would not answer in front of them.
That was the first decision we made together in three years.
