Chapter 10

Emily did not fully confront Daniel in the shop.

The recordings were not played publicly.

Military police did not enter.

No arrests were made.

No classified files were revealed.

The wedding ceremony was not shown.

No final consequences unfolded beneath the warm cedar lights.

The confrontation ended inside Dobbins Uniform & Tailoring with the shop door locked, the cuff-link box still open on the counter, and Colonel Emily Mercer standing in her black Army dress uniform beside the heavy brown fitting-room curtain.

Her medals remained perfectly aligned.

Her blonde hair stayed secured in its precise bun.

Her posture was disciplined enough that anyone passing the window might think nothing had happened.

But Frank Dobbins saw the truth in her eyes.

The confusion was gone.

The grief had not yet fully arrived.

In its place stood controlled fury.

Frank placed his phone on the counter, recording saved and already sent.

The measuring tape around his neck hung crooked now.

His old hands trembled, but his voice remained steady.

“I’m sorry, Colonel.”

Emily looked at the cuff links.

One in the box.

One on the counter.

Two small polished objects that had nearly entered her wedding, her uniform, her clearance, and her future under the cover of love.

Daniel had walked into the shop believing he was collecting a tool.

Instead, he left a trace.

Evan had followed him out in silence.

Whether guilt would make him speak later remained unknown.

Emily did not ask Frank to replay the audio.

She already remembered every word.

Once she marries me, her clearance opens every door.

Gone by Monday.

Then I tell the board she’s unstable.

She closed her hand around the edge of the counter, careful not to touch the evidence.

The wedding was not yet publicly canceled.

The report had not yet been filed.

The deeper network behind Daniel’s words remained hidden.

But the first thread had been caught.

Emily looked toward the mirrors, where her own reflection stared back in full uniform.

Not a bride.

Not a victim.

A colonel.

“Seal the cuff links exactly where they are,” she said.

Frank nodded.

Outside, daylight continued across the quiet Virginia street.

Inside, Emily stood beside the abandoned fitting-room curtain and understood that Daniel’s plan had failed for one simple reason.

He had mistaken access for trust.

And he had mistaken her silence for surrender.
