Chapter 7

Daniel’s composure cracked in a single breath.

Not dramatically.

No shouting.

No attack.

Just a small visible shift that told Emily the recording mattered more than he wanted to admit.

His shoulders tightened.

His eyes moved to the phone.

Then the storefront.

Then the mirrors.

Mirrors surrounded the shop, reflecting him from every angle.

In one reflection, he still looked like the polished captain Emily had agreed to marry.

In another, he looked like a man cornered by his own words.

Evan stood near the brass rail, pale and sweating despite the cool shop air.

Frank lowered his phone slightly but did not stop recording.

Daniel looked at Emily through the curtain gap.

“You’re ending your own career if you mishandle this.”

There it was.

The first threat.

Not loud.

Not vulgar.

Professional.

Tailored to wound the part of her that had survived too many rooms where women in command were called unstable before they were called right.

Emily’s expression did not change.

“You were going to say I was unstable by Monday.”

Daniel’s mouth closed.

She continued, “You said it before you knew I was here. That makes it cleaner than a threat.”

Evan looked at Daniel.

“Man, what did you do?”

Daniel ignored him.

“Emily, listen to me. There are people above both of us involved. You don’t understand the pressure.”

Frank muttered, “Funny how pressure always lands on the woman’s reputation.”

Emily almost smiled.

Almost.

Daniel stepped closer to the curtain.

“You think this is about you?”

“No,” Emily said. “That is why I’m still listening.”

That answer threw him.

Because Daniel had expected outrage.

Outrage was manageable.

Outrage could be framed.

But Emily was doing something more dangerous.

She was gathering structure.

Who above them?

What pressure?

Which files?

Why Monday?

What did the cuff links access?

What board?

She would not ask all of it here.

Questions asked too early teach liars what to hide.

Daniel tried another angle.

“If you walk away from me now, you will regret it.”

Emily looked at him through the narrow space.

“I already regret letting you close enough to know my passwords.”

His face tightened.

Evan’s eyes darted toward her.

That tiny reaction told Emily something else.

Passwords mattered.

Maybe Daniel had not obtained them yet.

Maybe he needed the wedding to legitimize access.

Maybe the cuff links were designed to plant, copy, trigger, or carry something into an event where no one questioned a groom adjusting a bride’s sleeve.

Emily looked at the box.

May you like

The little object had become uglier than any weapon.
