Chapter 9

Emily did not touch the cuff-link box.
That was important.
She did not let Frank touch it either.
The box remained where Daniel had placed it, open on the wooden counter, beside the matching cuff link she had slid from the curtain.
A neat little still life of betrayal.
Frank’s phone recorded.
The mirrors reflected.
Evan sweated.
Daniel recalculated.
Emily could almost see him moving through options.
Charm was failing.
Denial was compromised.
Threats were recorded.
Evan was unstable.
Frank had already transmitted the audio.
The cuff links could not be safely retrieved without escalating.
That left only retreat.
But men like Daniel hated retreat unless they could rename it.
He straightened his gloves.
“We are done here.”
Emily said nothing.
He looked at Evan.
“Let’s go.”
Evan did not move immediately.
Daniel’s head turned slowly.
“Lieutenant.”
The rank cracked like a whip.
Evan stepped forward, but his eyes stayed on Emily.
There was guilt there.
Fear.
Maybe calculation.
She did not trust it.
But she noted it.
Daniel moved toward the door.
Frank said, “Captain.”
Daniel stopped.
Frank nodded toward the box.
“Forgetting something?”
Daniel looked at the cuff links.
Then at Emily.
Then at Frank’s phone.
He smiled slightly, but it did not reach his eyes.
“Keep them.”
Emily said, “We will.”
His smile died.
Because we meant the evidence would not stay in a tailor’s drawer.
Daniel turned back toward the entrance.
Before stepping out, he looked at Emily one final time.
“You’re making enemies you don’t understand.”
Emily’s answer came immediately.
“No. I’m discovering the ones I already had.”
Evan looked away.
Daniel left first.
Evan followed, but paused at the threshold.
For one second, he seemed as if he might speak.
Daniel’s voice cut from outside.
“Evan.”
The lieutenant flinched and exited.
The shop bell rang again.
Silence returned.
Frank lowered the phone only after the door closed.
Emily stood very still.
Then her knees almost weakened.
Frank reached for her, but she raised one hand.
Not yet.
She needed ten more seconds of discipline before grief could touch her.
Frank whispered, “Colonel…”
Emily looked at the cuff links on the counter.
May you like
“Lock the door.”
