Chapter 5

Daniel had always been excellent at explanations.

That was how he survived.

A missed meeting became a classified delay.

A strange phone call became a family issue.

A locked drawer became operational privacy.

A sudden interest in Emily’s clearance became admiration for her “strategic reach.”

He never lied like a sloppy man.

He layered truth around the lie until questioning him made the other person seem unfair.

Emily had admired that verbal discipline once.

Now she recognized it as architecture.

From behind the curtain, she watched him rebuild.

“Emily,” Daniel said, “Evan and I were discussing a hypothetical risk scenario.”

Frank almost laughed.

Emily did not.

Evan looked at Daniel with alarm, clearly unsure whether to support the lie or avoid adding new audio to the recording.

Daniel continued, “My wording was poor.”

Emily stepped just close enough for the curtain to outline her figure.

“Was it?”

His eyes locked onto the fabric.

Relief crossed his face.

He had heard her.

Hearing her meant he could try to reach the part of her that still remembered him kneeling beside her on a pier, asking whether she would accept a complicated life with him.

Emily remembered that too.

The moonlight.

The ring.

The way he said he had never met a woman whose strength made him want to become better.

She had believed him.

Now she wondered whether even that line had been chosen for access.

Daniel said, “You know me.”

Emily’s voice came through the curtain, low and steady.

“I thought I did.”

His face tightened.

“Don’t do this here.”

“There it is,” she said.

“What?”

“Not don’t believe that. Not it isn’t true. Don’t do this here.”

Frank’s thumb adjusted on the phone.

Daniel noticed and snapped, “Stop recording.”

Frank’s reply was immediate.

“No.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

Emily moved before Frank could react.

Her hand pushed the curtain aside only enough for her eyes to become visible.

Not her full face.

Not a confrontation.

Just enough.

Daniel stopped.

The sight of her eyes did what the recording could not.

It told him that the woman behind the curtain was no longer confused.

Emily looked at the cuff-link box.

“Open the other one.”

Daniel’s hand went still.

Evan whispered, “Daniel…”

Emily’s gaze shifted to Evan.

The lieutenant paled.

She had commanded nervous men before.

Evan was not innocent.

But he was not the architect.

Not tonight.

Daniel closed the cuff-link box.

“I won’t participate in a setup.”

Emily’s voice stayed calm.

“You brought the box.”

That sentence left him nowhere clean to stand.
