Adrian told her the hearing was a formality.
The prenup would protect his fortune.
Claire would receive a comfortable settlement.
The twins would live primarily with him because the family court would never remove children from the parent who controlled their home, school tuition, and financial security.
Paige believed she would soon become the wife of a powerful chief executive.
She had even chosen offices she wanted renovated inside the company headquarters.
Now she stood beside the public gallery clutching her red handbag as though it were the only solid object left in the room.
Judge Calder asked whether she possessed materials related to company ownership.
Paige looked at Adrian.
He shook his head once.
The movement was small but unmistakable.

Paige’s fear changed into anger.
She opened her handbag and removed a sealed envelope.
“Adrian gave me this two weeks ago.”
Adrian lunged halfway from behind the table.
Crane caught his sleeve.
“Do not move.”
The court officer took the envelope and delivered it to the judge.
Inside was a proposed post-divorce business agreement.
It promised Paige fifteen percent of Hollis Strategic Technologies after she married Adrian.
The agreement described Adrian as the sole beneficial owner.
Paige had already signed it.
Adrian had signed too.
Judge Calder placed it beside the original incorporation records.
“You promised shares you did not own.”
Adrian turned toward Paige.
“That was a future arrangement.”
“You said Claire had signed everything over years ago,” she answered.
The gallery reacted with restrained gasps.
Claire watched Paige carefully.
She did not mistake the woman’s betrayal for innocence. Paige had knowingly continued an affair with a married man. She had helped Adrian plan a home where Claire’s sons were expected to visit on scheduled weekends.
But Paige had not known the central truth.
Adrian lied to everyone according to what he wanted from them.
To Claire, he said the company needed his leadership.
To investors, he called himself the founder.
To the twins, he claimed their mother had no money.
To Paige, he promised ownership.
To his attorneys, he said the corporate records supported him.
Every relationship was built around a different version of the same stolen life.
Paige looked at Claire.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire answered without hostility.
“You are sorry because he lied to you. My sons are here because he lied about me.”
Paige lowered her eyes.
Then she revealed something Adrian had not anticipated.
“He moved money yesterday.”
The attorneys froze.
“What money?” Judge Calder asked.
Paige pointed toward Adrian’s dark binder.
