Chapter 4 - The Attorney Opens the Folder

The attorney’s name was not announced.
That made her more intimidating.
She stood beside Eleanor in her black pinstripe suit, dark hair smooth, eyes steady, structured handbag resting against her side.
When she opened the leather folder, Samantha leaned forward instinctively.
The attorney angled it away.
Nothing was revealed.
No contracts.
No signatures.
No funding terms.
No final decision.
Only the existence of documents.
That was enough.
Samantha’s face tightened.
“I demand to know what is in that.”
The attorney looked at her calmly.
“Demand?”
The word, repeated once, stripped Samantha of authority.
The boutique owner swallowed.
“I mean, this involves my company.”
Eleanor turned slightly.
“Now it is your company?”
Samantha blinked.
“What?”
“When you struck me, it was your store. Your clients. Your standards. Now that funding is mentioned, it becomes a company.”
One executive lowered his eyes briefly, not in embarrassment, but to hide the faintest trace of contempt.
Samantha noticed.
Her panic grew sharper.
“Mrs. Caldwell, please. I built this place from nothing.”
Eleanor looked around at the marble floors, the chandeliers, the mirrored walls, the skyline view, the customers dressed in wealth.
“Nothing?”
Samantha’s jaw tightened.
“I worked for this.”
“I do not doubt you worked,” Eleanor said. “I question who you believe deserves dignity inside what you built.”
The words hit the room differently.
Not just an accusation.
A standard.
The attorney turned one page inside the folder.
Samantha’s eyes followed every movement.
“Please,” she said again. “I didn’t recognize you.”
Eleanor took a step closer.
“That is not a defense.”
“It matters.”
“It matters only to you.”
A customer near the floral display began crying quietly.
Samantha shot her a furious look, then immediately realized the mistake.
Eleanor saw it.
The executives saw it.
The attorney saw it.
The crying woman stepped back, cheeks burning.
Samantha’s fear was making her cruel again.
Eleanor’s voice softened.
“You are very consistent under pressure.”
Samantha’s lips trembled.
The broom remained on the polished floor.
Her white pantsuit remained flawless.
But the room no longer saw elegance.
May you like
It saw evidence.
