Chapter 8 - The Briefcases on the Display Table

The three briefcases sat on the boutique’s glass display table.

Black leather.

Silver latches.

Perfectly aligned beneath the chandeliers.

The executives stood behind them with stern expressions, looking less like investors and more like surgeons preparing to decide whether something diseased could be saved.

Samantha stared at the briefcases.

She had imagined those cases arriving at a celebration.

Champagne.

Congratulations.

Expansion plans.

New locations.

Magazine features.

A twenty-million-dollar future unfolding beneath her name.

Instead, they had arrived after the broom.

She swallowed.

“Can we speak privately?”

Eleanor answered immediately.

“No.”

Samantha flinched.

“This is humiliating.”

Eleanor looked at her faded blue dress.

“Yes.”

The word returned Samantha’s own cruelty to her.

The attorney closed the folder gently.

“We can proceed when you are ready, Mrs. Caldwell.”

Samantha’s eyes darted to Eleanor.

Proceed.

The word could mean anything.

Review.

Suspend.

Question.

Cancel.

Delay.

The final funding decision remained unrevealed.

That uncertainty punished Samantha more effectively than a declaration.

Eleanor looked at the executives.

“Before we proceed, I want clarity.”

The first executive nodded.

Samantha held her breath.

Eleanor turned toward her.

“When I walked in, did you ask my name?”

Samantha whispered, “No.”

“Did you ask if I had an appointment?”

“No.”

“Did you ask whether I needed medical help?”

Samantha’s mouth trembled.

“No.”

“Did you strike me?”

Silence.

The customers stared.

The attorney’s expression did not move.

Samantha’s hands shook.

“Yes.”

The word was barely audible.

But it existed.

Eleanor nodded once.

There was no triumph in her face.

Only confirmation.

“That is the first honest thing you have said since I entered.”

Samantha’s shoulders collapsed.

The boutique’s mirrored walls reflected her from every angle.

No escape.

No flattering side.
