Chapter 9 - Shall We Cancel It?

Eleanor walked to the center of the boutique.
Every eye followed her.
She looked small in the faded blue dress, almost fragile beneath the chandeliers, but the room bent around her authority now.
Samantha remained near the broom.
The executives stood by the briefcases.
The attorney waited beside the folder.
Customers lingered near clothing racks, no longer pretending they were shopping.
Through the windows, the Seattle skyline remained bright and indifferent.
Eleanor turned back toward Samantha.
“You wanted a luxury empire.”
Samantha swallowed.
“Yes.”
“You wanted expansion.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted access to capital, prestige, introductions, protection.”
Samantha’s voice cracked.
“Yes.”
Eleanor’s eyes sharpened.
“But you could not offer a chair to a coughing old woman in a thrift-store dress.”
Samantha began crying silently.
No one moved to comfort her.
That isolation was new for her.
Eleanor looked toward the executives.
Then she asked the sentence that changed the air.
“Shall we cancel her twenty-million-dollar funding?”
Samantha’s face went white.
The first executive placed his hand on the briefcase lid.
The second looked toward the attorney.
The third watched Eleanor, waiting.
No decision.
Not yet.
Samantha took one stumbling step forward.
“Mrs. Caldwell, please. I can fix this.”
Eleanor looked at her.
“What would you fix first? The funding risk, the public image, or the instinct?”
Samantha had no answer.
That was the problem.
She could hire public relations.
She could issue statements.
She could redesign policies.
She could donate to charities.
But instinct was what swung the broom before calculation arrived.
The attorney opened the leather folder again.
Still no contents visible.
A customer whispered, “Oh my God.”
The first briefcase latch clicked a second time.
Samantha’s fingers loosened completely.
The broom rolled away from her shoe.
Eleanor watched it move.
Then she looked back at Samantha.

The final decision remained suspended in the polished air.
