Chapter 18 - THE MAIN TRUTHBefore the rescue came the confession.

Margaret’s.
Her attorney contacted prosecutors when she learned police were searching the camp.
Margaret agreed to a proffer.
She admitted:
Richard confined Emily after their financial argument.
At first, he told Margaret Emily had attacked him.
Margaret came over.
Emily denied it.
Margaret chose Richard’s version anyway.
Then Emily showed her bruised wrist.
Asked for Claire.
Asked for police.
Margaret still did nothing.
Richard told her Patrick Sloan had tried to extort the company and Emily was “helping him.”
That was why Margaret became more frightened.
She believed Richard might face prison for financial crimes.
She did not know at first Patrick was also being held.
She learned three days later when Richard said:
“I’ve got two people threatening everything.”
Margaret asked where Patrick was.
Richard refused to say.
When Noah saw Emily, the risk exploded.
Richard decided to fake the funeral.
Margaret objected.
Then helped him keep Noah quiet.
She took Emily food.
She removed Emily’s wedding ring because Richard said:
“The coffin needs something personal.”
Margaret did that.
She took the ring from Emily’s hand.
Emily told her:
“If you do this, Noah will know what you are.”
Margaret cried during the proffer.
That did not make the act smaller.
Then the larger truth:
Patrick Sloan had discovered Richard was using inflated subcontractor invoices to shift company money into a side account he used to cover failing projects and personal debt.
Not millions.
Approximately $214,000 over two years, much of it later spent back on company obligations.
Richard called it temporary cash management.
Patrick called it fraud.
They argued.
Richard struck Patrick with a flashlight in the company warehouse.
Patrick fell.
Richard panicked.
Same pattern.
Instead of calling police, he confined Patrick overnight at H-17.
Overnight became weeks.
Emily discovered Patrick’s missing project files in Richard’s home office.
Then she found a text from Patrick’s sister asking Richard where her brother was.
Emily began digging.
Richard realized.
He confined her too.
