Chapter 8 - MARGARET SAYS SHE WAS PROTECTING EMILYMargaret asked for an attorney.

People interpret that as guilt.
It is a right.
Through counsel, she gave a statement.
Emily had suffered a “breakdown.”
Richard came to Margaret two days before the fake death announcement.
He said Emily had discovered financial problems, become hysterical, and threatened to leave with Noah.
He claimed she had taken sleeping medication and become dangerous.
Margaret went to the house.
She saw Emily in the hidden basement room.
“Was she locked inside?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Richard said she tried to run into the street.”
“Did Emily ask to leave?”
Margaret cried.
“Yes.”
“Did she ask for police?”
Pause.
“Yes.”
“Did you call?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Richard said she would destroy the family.”
There.
Not medical judgment.
Family.
Margaret admitted bringing soup and water.
She said Richard told her Emily needed one night to calm down.
One night became three.
Then Richard announced there had been an accident.
Margaret claimed she did not know about the empty coffin until the cemetery.
Did she believe Emily had been moved to psychiatric care?
At first, that was her story.
Then counsel corrected it after evidence showed Margaret texted Richard:
You cannot keep moving her forever.
That message came two days before the funeral.
She knew Emily remained alive.

She might not have known where.
But she knew.
