Chapter 3 - WHAT NOAH ACTUALLY SAWNoah did not tell police that Richard kidnapped Emily.

He did not say Margaret helped plan anything.
Those distinctions mattered.
His forensic interview happened the morning after the cemetery.
No Richard.
No Margaret.
No me.
The interviewer began with school.
Dinosaurs.
His dog, Baxter.
The cemetery came later.
“Why did you climb on the coffin?”
“Because Mom wasn’t inside.”
“How did you know?”
“I saw her.”
“Where?”
“Downstairs.”
“What downstairs?”
“At home.”
“When?”
He thought.
“Before Grandma said Mommy went to heaven.”
Not a date.
Age appropriate.
“Tell me what you saw.”
Noah described getting out of bed at night because he wanted water.
He heard a noise downstairs.
He thought Baxter was trapped.
He went to the basement.
A shelving unit had moved.
Behind it, a door.
Through a narrow gap:
Emily.
Sitting on the floor.
Hair messy.
Wearing gray sweatpants and one of Richard’s old college sweatshirts.
“Did Mom say anything?”
“She said my name.”
“What else?”
“Get Claire.”
My chest broke when Ortiz told me later.
Get Claire.
That was the message.
Not:
Solve this.
Not:
Attack Dad.
Get Claire.
The interviewer asked:
“What happened next?”
“Dad came.”
“What did Dad do?”
“Closed it.”
“Did he hurt you?”
“No.”
“What did he say?”
“That I was sleeping.”
“Were you?”
“No.”
“What happened to the key?”
“Grandma had it.”
“How do you know?”
“She opened the door with it.”
“When?”
“The soup day.”
Noah said Margaret carried a tray downstairs.
Soup.
Crackers.
Water.
He watched from the stairs.
Later she left the brass key on the kitchen counter while answering her phone.
Noah took it.
“Why?”
“To get Mom.”
“Did you open the door?”
“I tried.”
Richard caught him before he could.
The next day Noah was told Emily had died.
He hid the key inside the lining of his winter glove.
Then funeral day.
One detail chilled me.
The interviewer asked:
“Did anyone tell you not to say Mom was downstairs?”
Noah answered:
“Dad said if I said bad things, Aunt Claire would get taken away too.”
May you like
That was not merely concealment.
That was control through fear.
