Richard eventually accepted a negotiated plea.
He admitted kidnapping/unlawful confinement of both Emily and Patrick.
Admitted fabricating documents to create the false death narrative.
Admitted using Emily’s signature without authorization on specified loan instruments.
Admitted financial fraud on the strongest provable transactions.
He did not admit intending to kill either captive.
The state did not require a false murder narrative to obtain a serious sentence.
He received a substantial prison term measured in years, followed by supervision and restitution obligations.
Not life.
Long enough that Noah would become an adult before ordinary release eligibility under the sentence structure.
Margaret entered a substantially narrower plea tied to assisting confinement, evidence concealment, and false statements.
Her sentence included a short custodial component largely satisfied through a structured county program because of age, health, cooperation, and lack of prior record, followed by supervision and no unsupervised contact with Noah absent family-court approval.
Some people called that too lenient.
Emily said:
“I don’t need prison to make Grandma’s choice real.”
Noah was not asked to attend sentencing.
