Chapter 6 - the blue room
Police searched Carol and Robert’s house after obtaining warrants tied to the stolen trust records.
The blue room was not simply a guest room.
Inside the closet were clothes in Lucy’s size.
New.
Tags still attached.
School supplies.
A backpack.
Children’s books.
A framed photograph of Lucy.
No photographs of Anna.
On the desk sat an enrollment packet for an elementary school near Carol’s home.
Student:
LUCY PARKER.
Proposed guardian:
CAROL BENNETT.
Anna stared at the police photograph.
“They were going to move her schools.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Looks like preparation.”
“How long?”
The packet had been downloaded six weeks earlier.
The family’s plan predated the court petition.
Maybe even the trustee resignation form.
Detective Vega found a notebook in Carol’s desk.
Not a confession.
A checklist.
Trust review.
Anna evaluation.
Lucy transition.
School.
Medical records.
Property management.
Sell Lancaster units.
Anna looked at the last line.
Sell.
The child and the money existed on the same list.
Carol had written another note:
Megan says Evan can close within 30 days once trustee issue resolved.
Anna whispered:
“My mother planned everything like a project.”
Rebecca said nothing.
There were moments when sympathy would have sounded insulting.
The investigators also found Lucy’s original birth certificate.
Anna frowned.
“That was in my safe.”
Robert had taken it from the house.
Why?
A guardianship application often required identity documentation.
They had prepared for Lucy’s transfer in detail.
Then Detective Vega found something more disturbing.
An envelope marked:
ANNA — FITNESS.
Inside were notes from a private investigator.
Photographs of Anna grocery shopping.
Picking Lucy up from school.
Sitting alone at Daniel’s grave.
Entering Rebecca’s law office.
A report described Anna as “emotionally burdened.”
Another noted she once cried in her car for seventeen minutes after leaving a grief-support group.
Anna laughed through anger.
“They photographed me grieving my husband.”
Rebecca read the invoice.
The investigator had been hired by Robert.
Four months after Daniel died.
Long before Anna rejected the property sale.
So why were they watching her that early?
The trust review.
Rebecca checked Daniel’s will.
Six months after his death, Anna became full trustee automatically unless someone filed an objection.
Carol had filed nothing.
Maybe she had hoped Anna would voluntarily transfer control later.
Maybe property values had risen.
Maybe Evan Cole appeared.
The motive could have evolved.
Then the investigator’s older reports revealed something else.
Robert had asked him to document Daniel too.
Before Daniel died.
Anna froze.
“What?”
Photographs dated nearly two years earlier.
Daniel meeting bankers.
Inspecting the Lancaster buildings.
Entering a cardiology clinic.
Anna’s stomach tightened.
“Why were they watching Daniel?”
No one knew.
Robert’s invoice notes said:
Need confirmation D.P. intends trust change.
Daniel had apparently been considering altering the trust.
Rebecca searched her archived messages.
One email surfaced from Daniel, sent three weeks before his death.
Rebecca,
I want to remove Carol Bennett as successor trustee. Something feels wrong about the pressure around the Lancaster properties. Please draft alternatives. Do not tell Anna yet; I want to explain myself first.
Anna covered her mouth.
Daniel had known her family was pressuring him.
He died before changing the document.
Carol remained the backup trustee.
The opening they later tried to exploit.
Anna whispered:
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Rebecca’s face filled with regret.
“He told me he wanted to speak to you first. Then he died suddenly. Afterward, with everything happening, I didn’t connect his concern to your family.”
Anna looked toward Daniel’s photograph.
For eighteen months she had believed his trust structure reflected confidence in Carol.
In reality, he had been preparing to remove her.
Then Detective Vega found the final page of Robert’s investigator report.
Daniel met privately with Evan Cole twice.
Megan’s boyfriend.
