Chapter 9 - what “the event” actually meant
The explanation was less dramatic than Anna feared.
And in some ways, more revealing.
“The event” referred to Daniel’s planned meeting with a major redevelopment buyer.
Not his medical procedure.
Rebecca found the calendar entry.
Daniel intended to refinance the Lancaster buildings independently.
If successful, Evan Cole’s leverage disappeared.
Carol’s plan assumed the meeting would create a crisis between Daniel and the family.
Robert had arranged for one of Daniel’s loans to be called early.
Not illegally, perhaps.
But strategically.
He knew a bank officer.
The sudden financial pressure was supposed to force Daniel into Evan’s sale.
Daniel learned about it.
Refused.
Found alternate financing.
“The event” was the refinance closing.
If Daniel changed the trustee before then, Carol would lose any future leverage.
So the family had been preparing financial pressure.
Not murder.
Anna felt a strange relief.
Then shame for feeling relieved by fraud.
Daniel’s death remained consistent with natural causes.
The medical examiner reviewed available records.
Nothing immediately indicated otherwise.
Anna finally allowed herself to separate the crimes.
Her family did not need to have caused Daniel’s death to have betrayed him.
They had exploited him while alive.
Then exploited his absence.
Detective Vega found the core financial scheme.
Keystone Urban Partners needed the Lancaster buildings to complete a larger land assembly.
Without them, a proposed hospital-adjacent development lost its best access corridor.
Evan could eventually make tens of millions.
Megan’s promised share was much larger than the $1.8 million fee Anna first saw.
A private side agreement gave Megan a ten-percent interest in one project entity.
Robert would receive debt forgiveness.
Carol would receive trustee fees.
Everyone around Anna had an economic role.
Except Anna.
And Lucy.
They were the obstacles.
The hot-car incident had been designed to create leverage against both.
But one person still didn’t fit neatly.
Carol.
Money alone seemed insufficient.
She already lived comfortably.
Why risk her granddaughter?
Rebecca found an answer in Carol’s messages.
Carol to Megan:
I will not let Anna waste Daniel’s estate the way she wasted her own opportunities.
Megan:
This is about the deal.
Carol:
For you. For me it is about fixing what should have been fixed years ago.
Anna frowned.
“Fixing what?”
Further messages referenced Anna’s childhood.
Carol had always resented Anna’s independence.
College out of state.
Marriage to Daniel despite Carol calling him “too private.”
Refusal to join the family accounting firm.
Carol believed Anna made bad decisions whenever she was not guided.
The trustee role became emotional power, not just money.
Carol had convinced herself she was rescuing Lucy from Anna’s judgment.
That belief was more frightening than greed.
Greedy people knew they were taking.
Controlling people often called it love.
Then investigators found Carol’s handwritten notes for the custody petition.
Anna emotional since Daniel.
Anna works long hours.
Anna refuses advice.
Lucy attached to Grandma.
And:
A serious incident may be necessary before court acts.
Rebecca stared.
“There.”
Not specific.
But explicit.
Carol wanted a serious incident.
Megan provided one.
The heat made it far more dangerous than perhaps even Carol expected.
Still, she watched.
Robert photographed it.
No one opened the door.
Then Lucy told Anna something quietly at bedtime.
“Grandma called you selfish.”
Anna stroked her hair.
“When?”
“In the café.”
“What did she say?”
“That you kept Daddy’s money because you wanted everything.”
Anna closed her eyes.
Daniel’s estate belonged to Lucy.
Yet Carol had been teaching a six-year-old that her mother was stealing.
“What did you say?”
“I said Daddy gave it to us.”
Anna swallowed.
“What did Grandma say?”
Lucy looked frightened.
