Chapter 8 - Daniel’s locked email
Rebecca found a password-protected email archive Daniel had created.
The password hint:
LUCY’S FIRST WORD.
Anna knew it immediately.
Moon.
The archive opened.
Daniel had collected evidence for months.
Screenshots.
Property valuations.
Emails from Megan.
Messages from Robert.
One folder:
IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME.
Anna stopped.
Rebecca looked at her.
“You want to continue?”
“Yes.”
The first document was not a murder accusation.
It was a contingency letter.
Anna,
If you are reading this because I never got to explain, I need you to know your family has been pressuring me over the Lancaster buildings.
Anna covered her mouth.
Daniel wrote that Robert initially approached him with a “friendly” proposal.
Then Megan brought Evan.
Then Carol began asking why Lucy needed so much protected property.
Daniel became suspicious after Megan quoted numbers from a confidential valuation.
He changed passwords.
Someone regained access.
He planned to remove Carol as successor trustee.
Then came another paragraph.
I do not believe they would physically hurt us. I do believe they have convinced themselves taking control is “helping.”
Anna closed her eyes.
Daniel had underestimated them.
Or perhaps they had changed.
The hot-car plan showed how far rationalization could travel.
Another folder contained financial records linking Robert to Evan.
Robert had received a $120,000 “consulting advance” from Keystone Urban Partners.
Before Daniel died.
Rebecca whispered:
“That looks like undisclosed compensation.”
For what?
An email answered.
ROBERT:
Daniel won’t move.
EVAN:
Then succession is the next opportunity.
Anna stared.
Succession.
Daniel’s death would move control to Anna, with Carol as backup.
Was Evan merely discussing estate mechanics?
The message was chilling either way.
Robert responded:
Anna listens to her mother when things get hard.
That was the plan.
If Daniel died naturally—as he ultimately did—they expected Anna to become dependent on family.
At first, she did.
Carol cooked.
Megan watched Lucy.
Robert handled maintenance.
They inserted themselves everywhere.
Rebecca asked:
“Did they ever pressure you immediately after the funeral?”
Anna remembered.
Two weeks after Daniel died, Robert suggested hiring a property manager.
Megan recommended Evan’s company.
Anna refused because grief made any decision feel impossible.
They backed off.
Then returned months later.
The death may have been natural.
But they used it.
That alone was enough to destroy Anna’s trust.
Then the archive revealed one final email.
Daniel to Carol.
I know you accessed my medical records and my trust files. If it happens again, you will never be permitted to manage anything for Lucy.
Carol replied:
You are turning Anna against her own family.
Daniel:
No. I’m trying to make sure you cannot use her grief against her.
Anna began crying.
He had seen exactly what came next.
Rebecca sat beside her.
“He tried to protect you.”
“I didn’t know.”
“He wanted to tell you.”
Anna looked toward Lucy playing nearby.
Daniel had been carrying the burden alone.
Then Detective Vega called.
The search of Carol’s laptop had uncovered a draft document.
Created four days before Daniel died.
TITLE:
POST-DANIEL TRANSITION PLAN.
Anna stared.
“What?”
The plan assumed Daniel would no longer be managing the properties.
But was that because Carol knew he was ill?
He had been seeing a cardiologist.
Maybe she believed his condition was serious.
The document listed:
Support Anna emotionally.
Take over bills.
Help with Lucy.
Introduce Evan property plan after 90 days.
Avoid pushing trust immediately.
Cold.
Calculated.
But still not proof they expected Daniel’s death on a specific day.
Then one line stood out:
If D changes trustee before event, entire strategy fails.
Before event.
Not “before death.”
Not “before surgery.”
Event.
What event?
Daniel had a scheduled medical procedure the week after he died.
A routine cardiac diagnostic test.
Carol knew.
Perhaps she assumed that would trigger trust changes.
Or something else.
Detective Vega refused to speculate.
