Chapter 7 - what Daniel learned before he died
Anna had spent eighteen months avoiding questions about Daniel’s final weeks.
His death had been classified as natural.
He collapsed at home after complaining of chest discomfort.
Paramedics could not save him.
There had been no reason to suspect anyone.
There still might not be.
Rebecca warned Anna not to turn every betrayal into murder.
Anna agreed.
But Daniel’s secret meetings with Evan mattered.
Detective Vega interviewed Evan.
He arrived with an expensive attorney.
“Did you know Daniel Parker?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He owned property my company wanted.”
“Did he agree to sell?”
“No.”
“Why meet twice?”
“I increased the offer.”
“What was the offer?”
“Three point six million.”
Anna stared from the observation room.
Still low.
Detective Vega asked:
“Did Daniel know you were dating Megan Bennett?”
Evan hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Did Anna?”
“No.”
“Why hide it?”
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
“Daniel apparently did.”
She placed one of Daniel’s emails on the table.
Evan’s expression tightened.
Daniel had written:
I will not sell to a company connected to Anna’s family. I do not like how Megan obtained private trust information. Do not contact me again.
Anna felt cold.
Megan had given Evan private information while Daniel was alive.
The pressure began before his death.
Rebecca found an even stronger clue.
Daniel had scheduled an appointment with an estate investigator two days after the date he died.
Purpose:
Unauthorized access to trust records.
Anna stared.
“He thought someone was stealing information.”
“Yes.”
The investigator still had Daniel’s intake form.
Suspected person:
Megan Bennett.
Reason:
Knowledge of confidential valuation report not shared outside counsel.
Megan knew what Daniel’s buildings were worth.
Maybe through Anna’s family.
Maybe through document access.
Police searched old account logs.
Daniel’s cloud storage had been accessed from Carol and Robert’s home IP address several times.
How?
Anna suddenly remembered.
After Daniel’s laptop broke, Robert helped him transfer files.
Robert knew the backup password.
The family’s access was not new.
They had been reading estate materials while Daniel was alive.
Anna felt violated on his behalf.
Then another connection surfaced.
Daniel’s cardiology clinic had sent him a medical release form.
Someone requested copies of his health records shortly before his death.
Requester:
Carol Bennett.
Claimed authorization:
Family caregiver.
Anna stared.
“Mom wasn’t his caregiver.”
The clinic ultimately denied the request.
But why did Carol want Daniel’s medical records?
Rebecca suggested one possibility:
“To understand whether he might be considered medically vulnerable for estate planning.”
Not proof of anything darker.
Still disturbing.
Anna confronted Carol only through attorneys.
Carol refused to explain.
Robert said he knew nothing.
Megan blamed Carol.
The family began turning on itself.
Then Detective Vega recovered an audio message Daniel had saved.
From Megan.
“Daniel, you’re making this personal. Evan’s offer solves everything. Mom already told you what happens if Anna ends up managing those buildings alone.”
Daniel replied by text:
Nothing “happens.” My wife manages what belongs to our daughter.
Megan:
You’re naive.
Daniel:
And you’re done accessing my files.
Three days later, he emailed Rebecca to remove Carol as successor trustee.
Two weeks later, he died.
Again:
No evidence yet connected the death to foul play.
But Daniel’s last actions proved the current scheme had roots before Anna became a widow.
Then Lucy, coloring beside Anna at the hospital follow-up, drew something unexpected.
A man beside Grandpa Robert.
Anna asked:
“Who’s that?”
“Mr. Evan.”
Anna froze.
“When did you meet Evan?”
“At Grandpa’s house.”
“When?”
“Before Daddy went to heaven.”
Anna stared.
She had never known Evan met Lucy while Daniel was alive.
“What happened?”
“Daddy came to get me.”
“Was he mad?”
Lucy nodded.
“He yelled at Grandpa.”
Anna’s heart pounded.
“About what?”
Lily thought.
“Daddy said, ‘Stay away from my daughter’s money.’”
Anna closed her eyes.
Daniel had confronted them directly.
