Chapter 3

Brandon was dressed for his wedding weekend when Nathan entered the bank.

Black tuxedo.

Polished shoes.

Loosened bow tie.

A man angry that consequences had interrupted his celebration.

He stood near the secured offices with Nathan’s parents beside him, speaking too loudly to Elena, the bank manager.

“This is family money,” Brandon said.

Elena kept her professional expression.

“This is a restricted medical fund for a minor child.”

“My brother is emotional. He doesn’t understand how to manage assets.”

Nathan heard that from the lobby entrance.

Lucy heard it too.

Her hands tightened around the stuffed giraffe.

Nathan pushed her wheelchair forward, careful over the tile seam near the teller line.

“Nathan,” his mother whispered.

Not relieved.

Alarmed.

His father’s face hardened.

“Why did you bring her?”

Nathan looked at him.

“She’s the person you tried to take from.”

Brandon scoffed.

“Don’t be dramatic.”

Lucy shrank back.

Nathan placed a hand on her shoulder.

“She had surgery four days ago.”

“And she’s alive,” Brandon snapped. “Unlike my wedding deposits if this doesn’t clear.”

The sentence landed like a slap.

Elena’s eyes sharpened.

A teller behind the counter stopped typing.

Nathan looked from Brandon to his parents.

“What does his wedding have to do with Lucy’s fund?”

No one answered.

That was answer enough.

His mother began crying then, as if tears could blur the shape of guilt.

“We were going to put it back,” she whispered.

Nathan felt the room tilt.

Brandon shot her a furious look.

Their father barked, “Enough.”

Elena stepped slightly closer to Nathan.

“Mr. Carter, the bank flagged the document because the signature and notary timing raised concerns. We asked everyone to remain here until officers arrived.”

Brandon turned red.

“You called police over paperwork?”

Elena looked at him calmly.

“Over an attempted transfer from a child’s protected medical account.”

Lucy whispered, “Daddy?”

Nathan crouched beside her.

“You’re okay. I’m right here.”

Then Brandon shouted the line that ended every excuse.

“She’s six! She won’t even remember the surgery!”

The police officer moved fast.
