Chapter 7

The second officer opened his folder near Elena.
No charges were announced.
No one was taken away.
But papers moved from hand to hand with the careful rhythm of something becoming official.
Brandon watched every movement.
His panic grew each time the officer placed another page behind the evidence sleeve.
“What is that?” he demanded.
No one answered him immediately.
That made him angrier.
“I asked a question!”
The first officer pulled him back another inch.
“Lower your voice.”
Brandon laughed harshly.
“In a bank? Really?”
Lucy flinched.
Nathan’s head turned.
Brandon saw his brother’s face and, for once, stopped before finishing.
Elena spoke to the second officer.
“We have the digital submission time, teller notes, lobby video, and the original request packet.”
Nathan’s father gripped the edge of the counter.
“Lobby video?”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
His confidence collapsed further.
Nathan watched him realize the bank had preserved more than a signature.
It had preserved posture.
Pressure.
Questions.
Answers.
Every moment they thought was only inconvenience.
His mother whispered, “We didn’t know police would be involved.”
Nathan almost laughed.
That was the apology his family had to offer.
Not we hurt Lucy.
Not we betrayed you.
Not we are sorry.
We didn’t know there would be consequences.
Lucy tugged his sleeve.
“Daddy?”
He crouched immediately.
“What is it?”
“Uncle Brandon said I won’t remember.”
Nathan closed his eyes for half a second.
Then opened them and looked at her.
“You don’t have to remember everything for it to matter.”
She blinked.
“Really?”
“Really.”
He touched the giraffe’s soft ear.
“And I’ll remember enough for both of us.”
Her lower lip trembled.
She leaned into him.
Nathan wrapped one arm around her carefully, avoiding the cast.
Behind them, Brandon muttered, “This is insane.”
Nathan did not turn.
Elena did.
“No,” she said calmly. “This is documented.”
The word struck Brandon harder than any shout.

Documented meant the story no longer belonged to the loudest person in the room.
