Chapter 6

Brandon hated that Lucy asked about the money.
Nathan saw it immediately.
The irritation in his brother’s eyes.
The way his mouth tightened as if a six-year-old child had inconvenienced him by understanding enough to be afraid.
That was when Nathan stopped seeing Brandon as selfish and began seeing him clearly.
Selfish people take more dessert.
Selfish people forget birthdays.
Selfish people complain about hospital parking.
Brandon had tried to raid a child’s medical account days after surgery and then shouted that she would not remember the pain.
That was not selfish.
That was dangerous.
Nathan leaned closer to Lucy.
“Do you want your headphones?”
She shook her head.
Her stuffed giraffe was pressed beneath her chin.
“I want to hear.”
His heart cracked.
He wanted to protect her from every word.
But Lucy had already learned adults whisper lies when children leave the room.
So he nodded.
“Okay. But if it gets too much, you tell me.”
She nodded back, solemn and small.
His father stared at the evidence sleeve.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
Elena looked at him.
“You presented this document as valid.”
“I was told it was valid.”
Brandon snapped, “Dad.”
Nathan turned sharply.
“Told by who?”
Silence.
His mother began crying again.
“I didn’t think it would hurt Lucy.”
Nathan looked at her.
“You didn’t think taking her surgery money would hurt her?”
“I thought Brandon would replace it after the wedding gifts came in.”
The bank lobby went dead quiet.
Even Brandon closed his eyes in fury.
Nathan’s father muttered, “Margaret.”
So that was it.
Not a misunderstanding.
A plan.
A temporary theft dressed in family language.
Nathan stood, one hand still on the wheelchair handle.
“You were gambling my daughter’s recovery on wedding gifts?”
His mother covered her face.
Brandon exploded.
“You act like I’m some monster! It was a short-term transfer!”
The officer tightened his hold again.
Nathan’s voice stayed low.
“From a six-year-old.”
“She has you!”
“She had all of you,” Nathan said. “Until she needed you.”
Lucy looked down at her cast.
The stuffed giraffe tilted in her arms.
Nathan saw her absorbing too much and forced himself to breathe.
He would not let his anger become another loud adult frightening her.
Not today.

Not in this bank.
