Chapter 12 - Beatrice’s voice

Beatrice did not panic.

That frightened Alex.

“I did not say those words.”

“It’s your voice.”

“I heard it.”

“You were in this house.”

“Yes.”

“Where at midnight?”

“In Arthur’s room.”

Arthur tapped twice.

Yes.

Cole checked.

A private nurse had logged Beatrice entering Arthur’s suite at 11:52 p.m.

She remained until 12:21.

Clara collapsed near the staircase around 12:14.

If the nurse’s timing was accurate, Beatrice could not easily have been both places.

Unless she left unnoticed.

Arthur insisted she did not.

Then how was her voice on Nathan’s recording?

Forensic audio analysis offered an unsettling answer.

The clip was synthetic.

Not entirely fake.

Constructed from real Beatrice speech samples.

Someone had generated her voice.

Derek stared.

“Deepfake audio?”

Whitmore Medical developed diagnostic speech software.

Its AI division maintained high-quality voice models for patients losing speech after neurological disease.

Arthur himself had participated in an experimental voice-reconstruction program before his stroke worsened.

To create a convincing Beatrice imitation, someone needed access to Whitmore Medical’s voice archive.

Evan Cross had access.

So did Alex.

Derek.

And research director Dr. Calvin Ross.

Another name entered the investigation.

Alex knew Calvin well.

College friend.

Twenty-year employee.

Godfather to Lily.

He had attended Clara’s funeral.

Standing quietly near the back.

Then left before police locked the doors.

Cole checked photographs.

There he was.

Black suit.

White flower in his lapel.

Watching Alex close the casket.

“Where is Calvin?”

Derek called.

No answer.

His office was empty.

Home empty.

Computer removed.

Cole looked at Alex.

“Tell me about him.”

Alex struggled.

“Calvin built our neurological software division.”

“Relationship with Clara?”

“Friends.”

“How close?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer bothered him.

Clara had never suggested anything inappropriate.

But she had met Calvin several times for foundation work.

Phone records showed fourteen calls between them during the month before her death.

Alex felt betrayed before reminding himself that secrecy did not automatically mean romance.

Clara had been investigating.

Maybe Calvin helped.

Police recovered cloud messages.

CLARA:

Can you tell if a voice file was generated by our system?

CALVIN:

Probably.

CLARA:

Can you do it without leaving a company log?

CALVIN:

Why?

CLARA:

Because someone is making Arthur say things he never said.

Alex stared.

Not Beatrice.

Arthur.

Someone had been generating synthetic voice recordings of Arthur after his stroke.

For what purpose?

Trust instructions.

Bank authorization.

Estate decisions.

Clara discovered it.

The entire mystery shifted again.

If forged voice files had been used alongside forged digital signatures, someone could manipulate Arthur’s estate without him speaking.

Beatrice went pale.

“Dear God.”

Julian checked legal archives.

Three amendments to the Continuation Trust had been approved after Arthur’s stroke using remote voice verification.

Arthur denied every one.

The amendments redirected authority away from Lillian and Lily.

Toward a corporate trustee.

Northstar Holdings.

Thomas’s company.

Alex looked furious.

“So Thomas forged Arthur’s voice?”

Thomas denied it when contacted.

“My Northstar was hijacked years ago.”

“Convenient.”

“Check the banking keys.”

They did.

Northstar control had transferred through a private digital certificate seventeen months earlier.

Authorized by:

Calvin Ross.

Calvin had quietly gained administrative authority over the dormant company.

Motive finally began forming.

He possessed voice synthesis technology.

Access to Alex’s credentials through company systems.

Knowledge of Arthur’s medical condition.

Access to Clara.

But did he have access to the medication?

Dr. Mercer admitted Calvin had visited his clinic under the guise of reviewing Arthur’s neurological treatment.

Cole issued a warrant.

Then Calvin called Alex.

“I didn’t kill her.”

Alex almost threw the phone.

“Come in.”

“I can’t.”

“Then you sound guilty.”

“I helped Clara.”

“With what?”

“Proving Arthur’s voice was forged.”

“Why did you control Northstar?”

Silence.

“Calvin.”

“Because Clara asked me to take it away from the person using it.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know his real name.”

“Stop.”

“I’m serious.”

Calvin said Clara traced fraudulent trust transactions to a remote operator using several identities.

She called him:

The Custodian.

Not because she knew who he was.

Because every message from him signed:

CUSTODIAN OF CONTINUITY.

Alex remembered the trust name.

Continuation.

Continuity.

Same philosophy.

Calvin whispered:

“Clara believed this started before Arthur.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It does if Arthur was never the person controlling the trust.”

“Then who was?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where are you?”

Calvin ignored it.

“Ask Lily what Clara told her about the doll.”

Alex looked toward his daughter.

“What?”

“Clara hid something else. Not in the broken doll.”

“Where?”

“The doll you brought home.”

Alex stared at the porcelain doll from Switzerland.

“That doll was with me.”

“Exactly.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Clara knew you were buying it.”

Alex remembered.

He had sent Clara a photograph from the shop two days before she died.

She had replied:

Perfect. Don’t let anyone open it before Lily.

Calvin said:

“She arranged something through the manufacturer.”

Alex slowly looked at the doll.

Police examined it.

Inside the packaging, beneath the molded base, was a sealed envelope placed there before Alex left Switzerland.

Someone had coordinated internationally.

The envelope was addressed in Clara’s handwriting:

FOR LILY — ONLY IF I AM GONE.

Inside was not a confession.

It was a single photograph.

Clara standing beside an elderly man.

On the back:

THIS MAN KNOWS WHO THE CUSTODIAN IS.

Alex recognized him from company history.

Edmund Whitmore.

Arthur and Beatrice’s father.

The man who supposedly died in 1986.

The photograph was dated six months ago.

👉 Clara’s final safeguard revealed someone had forged Arthur’s voice to manipulate the trust, while a recent photograph showed the previous Whitmore patriarch was apparently still alive decades after his reported death.
