Chapter 8 - the lawyer with Arthur’s watch

Julian Cross was arrested at a private airfield outside Cleveland.
He carried thirty thousand dollars cash.
A forged passport.
And no original trust documents.
He asked for a lawyer before Detective Cole even introduced herself.
“You are a lawyer,” she replied.
Julian did not smile.
Alex watched through the interview glass.
Cole placed the photograph on the table.
Arthur’s gold watch was unmistakable.
Julian stared at it.
“That proves I was in the house.”
“It proves more than that.”
“No.”
“You entered Arthur’s archive.”
“I did.”
“You removed the trust.”
“Yes.”
Alex felt fury.
At least someone finally admitted something.
“Why?”
Julian looked toward the observation glass.
He knew Alex was there.
“Because Clara asked me to.”
Alex entered despite Cole’s warning.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Julian looked exhausted.
“Your wife discovered the original trust had been altered twice.”
“By you?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“Because whoever did it understood the system better than any one of us.”
Julian claimed Clara asked him to remove the original documents from the cellar before Derek could access them.
She believed someone was manipulating Arthur’s estate.
“Why wear Arthur’s watch?”
“He gave it to me.”
Arthur confirmed with two taps.
Yes.
Alex stared.
“You helped Julian?”
Arthur tapped twice.
Julian continued.
“Arthur knew someone inside the family was watching Clara.”
“Who?”
“He couldn’t tell me.”
“Why?”
“Because after his stroke he couldn’t speak well enough, and he didn’t trust written notes.”
Alex remembered Arthur’s tapping system with Lily.
Simple.
Private.
Difficult for outsiders to understand.
“What happened to the documents?”
“I moved them.”
“Where?”
Julian looked down.
“Clara took them.”
“When?”
“About 9:30 that night.”
Before the argument with Derek.
“What did she do with them?”
“I don’t know.”
“What about her doll?”
Julian frowned.
“What doll?”
The photograph showed him carrying it.
He looked confused.
Then corrected Alex.
“That wasn’t Clara’s.”
“What?”
“Beatrice gave it to me.”
Every eye shifted.
Beatrice was questioned again.
She admitted taking Clara’s porcelain doll from the bedroom after discovering it.
“I knew Clara was hiding something.”
“So you gave it to Julian?”
“I asked him to open it.”
“Why destroy it?”
“I didn’t.”
Julian said the doll broke accidentally when he tried removing the head.
Inside he found the metal capsule.
“What was inside?”
“A microSD card.”
“Where is it?”
He looked toward Beatrice.
“I gave it to her.”
Beatrice’s face hardened.
“You did not.”
“Yes, I did.”
“No.”
Arthur slammed one hand against the chair.
Three taps.
Look.
He pointed toward Beatrice’s handbag.
She immediately clutched it.
Cole reached for the bag.
“I need that.”
“You have no right.”
“I can obtain a warrant in minutes.”
Beatrice finally surrendered it.
Inside were cosmetics.
Keys.
Handkerchief.
A rosary.
And a microSD card taped beneath the lining.
Alex stared.
“You had it this entire time?”
Beatrice’s composure broke.
“I was protecting Arthur.”
“From what?”
“From Clara.”
Arthur struck once.
No.
Beatrice shouted:
“You didn’t hear what she was planning!”
Cole inserted the card into an evidence laptop.
Three files.
The first contained copies of trust amendments.
The second showed security footage from Arthur’s study.
The third was an audio recording.
Clara’s voice.
“I know someone forged Arthur’s signature.”
Another voice answered.
Beatrice.
“You don’t understand what exposure would do.”
“Exposure to whom?”
“To this family.”
Clara said:
“I don’t care about the family name.”
Beatrice:
“You will when Lily loses everything.”
Clara:
“Lily doesn’t need dirty money.”
Beatrice:
“It isn’t only money.”
Then Clara said something Alex had not expected:
“I know about Thomas.”
Beatrice went silent.
The recording ended.
Alex looked at her.
“Who is Thomas?”
Beatrice stared at Arthur.
Arthur began trembling.
Lillian had already mentioned that name.
When Alex entered her room, she had said:
You look like Thomas.
Everyone assumed Thomas was their father.
Maybe they had been wrong.
Beatrice whispered:
“Thomas was Arthur’s son.”
Alex felt the room go silent.
Arthur had a son no one knew about.
Derek and Alex’s father had always been said to be Arthur’s only child.
But Beatrice continued:
“Thomas was born before Arthur married your grandmother.”
Alex stared at his grandfather.
Arthur tapped twice.
Yes.
“Where is he?”
Beatrice’s eyes filled.
“We were told he died.”
“When?”
“Thirty-eight years ago.”
Alex felt dread.
Another family member erased.
Another death no one had questioned.
Cole looked at the trust documents.
“If Thomas lived, would he have rights to the Continuation Trust?”
Beatrice whispered:
“More than Lily.”
Arthur suddenly struck the wheelchair armrest.
Once.
No.
Again.
No.
Then three times.
Look.
He pointed not toward Beatrice.
Not toward the trust.
Toward Alex.
Arthur’s eyes filled with tears.
And Alex realized his grandfather was not trying to say Thomas had died.
May you like
He was trying to say Alex needed to look at himself.
👉 The microSD card proved Clara knew about a secret son Arthur supposedly lost decades earlier—and Arthur’s desperate signal suggested Thomas’s connection to Alex was far more personal than anyone had admitted.
