Chapter 14 - Clara’s last thirteen minutes

Forensics recovered another damaged audio file from Clara’s phone.

The final thirteen minutes before her death.

Everyone gathered in the estate library.

Alex insisted Lily remain upstairs with Megan Price.

He did not want her hearing her mother’s last moments.

The recording began at 12:01 a.m.

Clara’s footsteps.

Then her whisper:

“I found the key.”

A chair moved.

Arthur made a faint sound.

Clara:

“It was under your seat.”

Arthur tapped.

Three.

Clara:

“Yes. I’m looking.”

She had discovered the Custodian hardware token.

Then:

“I’m putting my phone here too. If something happens, they’ll search me. They won’t search you.”

Alex closed his eyes.

Clara had planned ahead.

She knew she was in danger.

At 12:04, another sound appeared.

Door opening.

Clara removed herself from Arthur’s room.

Footsteps followed her.

Then the synthetic Beatrice voice:

“Clara, you should have left Thomas buried.”

Clara answered:

“You’re not Beatrice.”

A pause.

Then the false voice changed.

No longer Beatrice.

Now Arthur.

“Very good.”

Everyone stared.

The Custodian could imitate multiple voices.

Clara:

“You forged the trust amendments.”

Unknown voice, now natural but deliberately distorted:

“You made the mistake of believing the trust exists for people.”

Clara:

“It exists because Lillian invented what your family stole.”

Voice:

“The company survived because sentiment never controlled it.”

Clara:

“Who are you?”

Voice:

“You already know.”

A scuffling sound.

Clara gasped.

Then:

“You drugged the tea.”

The room froze.

Voice:

“You weren’t supposed to drink that cup.”

Clara:

“Who was?”

Silence.

Then Clara whispered:

“Arthur.”

Alex stared at his grandfather.

The tea containing Arthur’s own medication may originally have been intended for Arthur.

The plan might have been to kill him.

Clara drank it accidentally—or deliberately intercepted it.

That explained the dosage.

The Custodian had perhaps intended Arthur to die naturally from an apparent cardiac event using his own medication.

Instead Clara consumed the contaminated drink.

Clara continued:

“You were going to kill him.”

Voice:

“I was going to end a liability.”

Arthur began crying.

Recording:

Clara ran.

Footsteps.

A collision.

Breathing.

Then Clara said:

“If I die, Alex will find you.”

Voice:

“No. Alex will be blamed.”

That confirmed the frame.

Clara:

“He has an alibi.”

Voice:

“Alibis explain where bodies are. They don’t explain instructions.”

The forged digital trail.

Alex’s name.

His email.

His credentials.

Everything had been planned before Clara died.

Then a second voice appeared.

Nathan Hale.

“Stop!”

A struggle.

Nathan shouted:

“She’s not part of this!”

Unknown:

“She made herself part of it.”

Clara gasped again.

Something heavy struck the staircase railing.

Then Nathan:

“Clara, stay with me.”

The recording captured rapid footsteps leaving.

Nathan remained.

He called someone.

“Mercer. Get here now.”

Dr. Mercer.

That explained why he signed the death certificate.

He arrived after Clara was injured.

Nathan whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Clara’s voice was barely audible.

“Lily.”

“I’ll protect her.”

“No.”

“What?”

“Protect… the doll.”

Then the recording distorted.

Final seconds:

Clara whispered a name.

But static swallowed it.

The audio ended.

Alex stared at the screen.

Nathan had not killed her.

At least not based on this recording.

He tried to help.

Dr. Mercer came afterward.

The Custodian fled.

And Clara suffered injuries near the staircase after already ingesting the contaminated tea.

Full autopsy now confirmed her death was caused by a combination of cardiac instability and head trauma.

Neither alone might have been fatal.

Together they were.

Derek’s earlier assault was not the killing blow.

Teresa’s concealment obstructed evidence but did not cause the death.

Beatrice had lied repeatedly but had not been in the hall.

Mercer falsified paperwork under pressure.

Nathan disappeared after witnessing the real attacker.

Everyone’s sins had created the darkness in which one person could murder Clara.

But only one person caused her final injuries.

Cole enhanced Clara’s last whispered word.

Audio experts isolated three syllables.

Not a full name.

Possibly:

“Mar—shall.”

Or:

“Mar—cell.”

Or:

“Mar—cus.”

Alex searched family records.

No obvious match.

Then an officer entered.

“We found Nathan Hale.”

Alive.

Hospital outside Indianapolis.

Admitted under a false name with a stab wound.

Alex drove there with Cole.

Nathan looked weak.

When Alex entered, he cried.

“I failed her.”

“Who attacked Clara?”

Nathan looked toward the door.

“I never saw the face.”

“You were there.”

“They wore a medical mask.”

“Voice?”

“Changed electronically.”

“Male or female?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did Clara say before you arrived?”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“She said something about the funeral.”

“What?”

“She said, ‘You won’t get to bury the evidence this time.’”

Cole leaned closer.

“This time?”

Nathan nodded.

“She said the Custodian had done this before.”

“To whom?”

“Thomas.”

Alex froze.

Thomas had never been killed.

“He’s alive.”

“I know.”

“Then who?”

Nathan struggled to breathe.

“Clara said Thomas wasn’t the person they buried.”

The supposed factory death decades earlier involved another body.

Another victim erased under Thomas’s name.

Clara discovered who.

Nathan looked at Alex.

“That’s why she died.”

“Who was buried as Thomas?”

Nathan whispered:

“Richard.”

Alex’s heart stopped.

The father who raised him.

Richard Whitmore.

Family history said Richard died fifteen years ago from cancer.

But Nathan claimed Richard had actually died decades earlier.

If true, then the man Alex remembered as his father for most of his childhood and adulthood had not been Richard Whitmore at all.

Someone had been wearing Richard’s identity.

And that person had lived inside the Whitmore family for years.

👉 Clara’s final recording proved the Custodian intended to kill Arthur and frame Alex, but Nathan’s testimony revealed an even older secret: the man who raised Alex may not have been Richard Whitmore at all.
