Chapter 2 - the voice on Clara’s phone

Detective Hannah Cole ordered the drawing room cleared except for immediate family.

No one was allowed upstairs.

No one was allowed outside.

Two officers stood beside the front doors while another photographed Clara’s casket, the staircase, and Arthur’s wheelchair.

Alex stayed beside Lily.

Teresa sat rigidly on the sofa.

Derek remained standing.

Beatrice refused to sit at all.

Arthur watched everyone.

His eyes were alert.

His speech might have weakened after the stroke, but Alex could see something unmistakable in his grandfather’s expression.

Arthur understood exactly what was happening.

Cole placed Clara’s phone inside a transparent evidence sleeve.

“Who knew this phone existed?”

No one answered.

She looked at Teresa.

“Your granddaughter says you took it.”

Teresa swallowed.

“I picked it up.”

“When?”

“After Clara… after the accident.”

“Where?”

Teresa looked toward the staircase.

“On the floor.”

Alex stared.

“You told me her phone was missing.”

“I panicked.”

“For three days?”

“I didn’t know what to do.”

“You arranged my wife’s funeral while you were deciding?”

Beatrice interrupted.

“Teresa was grieving.”

Alex turned on her.

“Stop answering for everyone.”

Cole raised a hand.

“Mrs. Whitmore, what did you do with the phone?”

Teresa looked at Arthur.

“I left it in the kitchen.”

Arthur struck his wheelchair once.

Lily looked at him.

“That means no.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Cole crouched.

“You understand him?”

Lily nodded.

“Grandpa made tapping games after he got sick.”

“What does one mean?”

“No.”

“Two?”

“Yes.”

“Three?”

“Look.”

Arthur tapped twice.

Yes.

Cole looked back at Teresa.

“Did you leave Clara’s phone in the kitchen?”

Arthur struck once.

No.

Teresa began crying.

“I did.”

Arthur tapped once again.

Harder.

“No,” Lily translated.

Alex felt anger rise.

“Mom.”

“I put it in my bedroom.”

Arthur tapped twice.

Cole asked:

“And Arthur later found it?”

Two taps.

“Yes.”

Teresa covered her face.

“I didn’t know he had taken it.”

Derek finally spoke.

“This is insane. Play the recording.”

Cole looked at him.

“You wanted me not to thirty seconds ago.”

“I was shocked.”

“No. You were afraid.”

Derek said nothing.

Cole opened the audio file.

Timestamp:

10:48 p.m.

The night Clara died.

Static.

Footsteps.

Clara breathing quickly.

Then her voice.

“Derek, let go of me.”

Alex’s grip tightened around Lily’s hand.

Derek closed his eyes.

His recorded voice answered.

“You don’t understand what you found.”

“I understand exactly what I found.”

“You’re going to destroy this family.”

“No. Someone in this family already did that.”

A scuffling noise.

Clara gasped.

Then something struck wood.

Lily covered her ears.

Alex lifted her into his arms.

On the recording Clara shouted:

“Don’t touch me again!”

Teresa’s voice appeared.

“Derek! Stop!”

Then Clara:

“Teresa, give me my phone.”

A pause.

Teresa answered:

“No.”

Alex stared at his mother.

The recording continued.

Clara’s breathing was uneven.

“You knew.”

Teresa cried:

“I knew something was wrong. I did not know this.”

“Then help me.”

“I am trying to keep everyone alive.”

Derek said:

“Give me the phone.”

Clara:

“Get away from me.”

Then another sound.

A door somewhere nearby opening.

A voice spoke.

Low.

Controlled.

Too distant for Alex to identify.

“Not here.”

Everyone froze.

The voice continued:

“Arthur can hear us.”

Arthur’s eyes widened.

The recording crackled.

Clara whispered:

“You.”

Then the audio stopped.

Cole replayed the final five seconds.

Again.

The unknown voice remained unclear.

Male or female was difficult to tell because of distance and distortion.

Derek rubbed both hands over his face.

Cole turned.

“Who entered the room?”

“I don’t know.”

“You were there.”

“I left.”

“When?”

“Before that.”

The recording contradicted him.

His breathing could still be heard faintly.

Cole pointed that out.

Derek’s face reddened.

“I don’t remember every second.”

Alex stepped toward him.

“What did Clara find?”

Derek looked away.

“What?”

“She said you didn’t understand what she found.”

“Business records.”

“What records?”

“Dad’s estate.”

Arthur tapped once.

No.

Derek looked at him.

“Dad, stop.”

Arthur tapped three times.

Look.

He pointed toward the far wall.

A portrait of Arthur and his late wife hung above the fireplace.

Behind it?

Cole asked.

Arthur tapped twice.

Two officers removed the portrait.

A small wall safe appeared.

Beatrice’s face changed.

Alex noticed.

“Did you know about that?”

“Of course. It’s Arthur’s house.”

Cole asked Arthur:

“Do you want us to open it?”

Two taps.

“Yes.

A keypad waited beside the handle.

Arthur struggled to lift his left hand.

Lily approached.

“He wants me.”

Alex hesitated.

Arthur tapped twice.

Lily knelt beside him.

He touched her palm.

One finger.

Then four.

Then nine.

Then two.

Cole entered it.

The safe clicked open.

Inside were documents.

A sealed envelope.

And a small bottle of prescription heart medication bearing Arthur Whitmore’s name.

Cole removed it carefully.

Half the tablets were missing.

Arthur stared at the bottle.

Then began striking his wheelchair violently.

One.

One.

One.

No.

Lily whispered:

“Grandpa says that’s not supposed to be there.”

Alex looked at the medication.

Then at Clara’s casket.

His wife had supposedly died from injuries after a fall.

But now someone had hidden Arthur’s medication behind a locked wall.

And Clara’s last recording suggested she had discovered something involving his estate.

Cole looked at the family.

“Nobody leaves this house until I know exactly what happened here.”

Then an officer approached her from the hallway.

“Detective?”

He whispered something.

Cole’s expression changed.

“What?”

“We just spoke to the medical examiner.”

Alex stepped closer.

“About Clara?”

Cole looked at him.

“The original death certificate was signed before toxicology was complete.”

Alex stared.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“But they have preliminary blood results now.”

Teresa stopped crying.

Derek went absolutely still.

Cole continued:

“They found Arthur’s heart medication in Clara’s system.”

Arthur slammed both hands against his wheelchair.

And Aunt Beatrice quietly backed away from the open safe.

👉 Clara’s recording exposed a violent confrontation, but the first toxicology result suggested her fall may have happened only after someone secretly gave her Arthur’s prescription medication.
