Chapter 4

Daniel wanted to go after Victor.
Elena felt it in the way his body tightened.
But he did not leave her.
That mattered.
He pressed the folded cloth carefully against her cheek, eyes blazing toward Victor but hands gentle against Elena’s skin.
“Look at me,” he whispered. “Stay with me.”
Elena’s vision blurred at the edges.
The string lights became soft circles.
Guests moved.
Phones rose.
Someone screamed for an ambulance.
Someone else said, “Did he just—”
Daniel turned sharply toward Victor.
“Eight people saw what you did.”
Victor’s face showed no fear.
Only irritation.
“Family matters are not your concern.”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“You injured my fiancée in front of witnesses.”
Victor stepped closer.
A guest moved between them.
Not bravely.
Instinctively.
Then the sirens grew louder.
Elena heard them and forced herself upright.
Her mind moved to procedure because procedure had always saved her from panic.
Evidence.
Witnesses.
Object.
Cloth.
Dress.
Statements.
Time.
She saw the brick fragment near the hedge.
A torn piece of lace near Daniel’s shoe.
The cloth against her cheek.
The guests recording.
Her father’s face.
Her mother’s smile fading as she realized cameras were still raised.
When the paramedic reached her, Elena took one breath and said, “Seal everything and preserve the chain of custody.”
Daniel looked at her with pain and pride at the same time.
Victor scoffed.
“She’s always loved performing intelligence.”
The paramedic did not laugh.
He looked at the brick fragment.
Then at the phones.
Then at Elena.
And he understood she was not being dramatic.

She was protecting the truth before her family could rename it.
