Chapter 8

Lydia began whispering.
Not to Victor.
To Vanessa.
“Don’t say anything.”
Elena heard it.
So did Daniel.
So did Caroline, who paused for half a second without turning around.
Vanessa’s face had lost every trace of the girl who laughed beneath the string lights.
She looked at the sealed envelope as if it carried a childhood memory she had been told not to touch.
Elena wondered what Vanessa knew.
A bedtime story?
An overheard argument?
A locked drawer?
The same old wax seal on another family document?
Lydia gripped Vanessa’s wrist.
“Do not help her.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Mom, what is it?”
Lydia looked sharply toward Victor.
That glance told Elena more than Lydia intended.
Victor was not the only keeper of the secret.
He may have thrown the brick.
But Lydia had guarded the lie.
Caroline addressed the court.
“The testament’s existence was suppressed from prior proceedings. We are not asking the court to determine ownership today. We are asking that the document be opened under formal supervision because recent violence against my client appears connected to attempts to prevent disclosure.”
Victor snapped, “That is outrageous.”
Daniel’s voice came from behind Elena, controlled and low.
“Eight people saw what you did.”
Victor turned toward him.
The judge struck the bench lightly.
“Mr. Ortega.”
The name sounded different in court.
Less like a dynasty.
More like a defendant waiting to become one.
Elena lowered her eyes to the blank legal sheet in her hands.
Her fingers were steady.
The scar near her cheek tightened when she breathed.
She remembered Lydia’s words.
Let’s see if he still wants you now.
Daniel still did.
But the courtroom was about something larger than love.
May you like
It was about what the family had done to keep power.
