Chapter 6

The match cut came weeks later.

A clear evidence bag sealed shut in the hospital file.

Then a cream testament envelope placed on polished courtroom wood.

Elena sat at the county courthouse in Scottsdale wearing a fitted black blazer and white blouse. Her hair fell in controlled waves around her face, and a faint healing scar marked her cheekbone.

She did not hide it.

Lydia sat behind Victor in the gallery, her pearl necklace resting against her throat like armor that no longer worked.

Vanessa sat beside her, pale, silent, and smaller than she had looked at the engagement dinner.

Daniel sat behind Elena.

He did not touch her shoulder.

He knew she did not need to be steadied.

The eight witnesses were present under subpoena or voluntary appearance. Some avoided Victor’s eyes. Others watched him with the discomfort of people who had once laughed at his jokes and now needed to explain why they had stayed quiet so long.

Caroline Shaw stood beside Elena with two folders.

One evidence folder.

One sealed testament envelope.

The judge had not opened it.

Not yet.

The hearing was not about deciding everything.

Not arrests.

Not inheritance.

Not ownership.

Not the final fate of the Ortega fortune.

It was about whether the sealed testament could be entered for review alongside the preserved evidence from the engagement dinner.

Victor’s attorney objected repeatedly.

Caroline answered with dates, filings, custody logs, and the eight witness recordings.

Elena remained still.

When Victor saw the old wax seal on the testament envelope, the color shifted in his face.

Vanessa saw it too.

And for the first time, Elena understood her sister recognized the seal.
