Chapter 9

Caroline placed the sealed envelope closer to the judge.
The wax seal remained unbroken.
Old.
Cream-colored.
Quietly devastating.
Elena looked at it and felt strangely sad.
Her grandmother’s name was connected to that envelope.
So was a story Elena had only partly understood as a child.
A woman cut out of the will.
A brother who vanished.
A land purchase no one discussed.
A foundation account Victor always called “legacy capital.”
Elena had once asked where the first money came from.
Victor answered, “Sacrifice.”
She thought he meant hard work.
Now she wondered whose sacrifice he had meant.
The judge reviewed Caroline’s filing.
The courtroom held still.
Victor’s breathing grew louder.
Lydia’s fingers pressed against her lips.
Vanessa’s tears finally spilled, but she wiped them quickly, perhaps afraid her father would see weakness even now.
Daniel sat behind Elena with restrained fury, but he did not speak again.
This was Elena’s fight.
Her evidence.
Her family.
Her face marked by the cost of asking questions.
The judge looked toward Victor’s counsel.
“I will hear one final objection before determining whether the seal may be broken.”
Victor’s attorney stood, but Victor grabbed his sleeve.
Not discreetly.
Desperately.
A murmur moved through the room.
The court officer stepped closer.
Victor released him.
Caroline looked at Elena.
Elena nodded once.
Open it.
Not yet spoken.
Not yet ordered.
But the moment approached.
