Chapter 10 - THE BOX AT THE BANK
The deposit box contained no cash.
It held medical photographs, foundation ledgers, a replacement passport, and copies of Graham’s private correspondence.
The passport carried Adrian Shaw’s photograph under the name Arthur Sloan.
The expiration date was current.
Adrian was alive.
The medical photographs showed Graham entering clinics, eating at restaurants, and attending board meetings. Someone had monitored him long before Vanessa began poisoning his food.
One page recorded his reactions after each dose.
Day 4: tinnitus.
Day 12: balance disturbance.
Day 31: first missed conversation.
Day 58: increased reliance on Vanessa.
The notes were handwritten.
Vanessa denied writing them.
Jonathan’s handwriting did not match.
Adrian had personally tracked Graham’s decline.
The foundation ledgers documented twenty million dollars diverted across eight years. Jonathan concealed the losses through legal expenses. Adrian controlled the receiving companies.
Vanessa joined after discovering the transfers.
Instead of exposing them, she demanded a share.
The poisoning protected all three.
Graham’s upcoming audit threatened to reveal that money had disappeared since his father’s death.
The forged medical proxy would allow Vanessa to control the immediate response.
Jonathan would protect the legal structure.
Adrian would empty the remaining accounts and vanish.
Vanessa’s stronger dose endangered the plan by attracting criminal attention too early.
The deposit box also contained a letter from Graham’s father.
It was dated two weeks before the plane crash.
Graham,
Adrian has moved foundation money without authorization. Jonathan believes we can recover it quietly, but I no longer trust either of them. If anything happens to me, audit every legacy account before signing new authority.
Graham read the letter three times.
Jonathan had handled the estate after the crash.
He never delivered it.
Adrian had likely recovered it from Graham’s father’s files and kept it as leverage.
The plane crash itself returned to the center of the investigation.
Rachel refused to call it murder without evidence, but she requested the original mechanical reports.
The aircraft had suffered a fuel-system failure.
A maintenance invoice connected the repair to a company Adrian controlled.
The cause officially remained accidental.
The new financial evidence made accident harder to accept.
Jonathan requested a plea negotiation when told the letter had been found.
He offered to testify against Vanessa and Adrian.
“What happened on the plane?” Rachel asked.
“I wasn’t there.”
“Did Adrian survive?”
Jonathan closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
He claimed Adrian canceled his place on the flight at the last minute but left his luggage aboard. After the crash, he used the confusion to disappear.
“Did Graham’s father know Adrian wasn’t on the plane?”
“No.”
“Did you?”
“Afterward.”
Jonathan helped Adrian obtain a new identity in exchange for silence about the concealed foundation transfers.
He insisted Adrian did not cause the crash.
Rachel did not believe his certainty.
Before Jonathan could provide Adrian’s location, the detention facility received an envelope containing a photograph of Jonathan’s daughter.
A note beneath it read:
Old agreements remain enforceable.
