Chapter 5 - THE RABBIT’S CAMERA

The stuffed rabbit had belonged to Lily since infancy.
Its left ear was patched. One eye had been replaced with a black button, and the fur along its back had faded from years of being held.
Three weeks before the gala, Nora placed a tiny motion camera inside it.
She had bought the device after finding Graham unconscious in the breakfast room. Vanessa claimed he had fainted from exhaustion, but Nora noticed white residue inside his cup.
“I needed proof,” Nora told Rachel. “I was too afraid to accuse her without it.”
The camera recorded only when someone moved directly in front of Lily’s toy shelf.
Most files showed Lily playing.
Several showed Vanessa entering the nursery because she believed Nora kept Graham’s spare medication there.
One recording captured her speaking on the phone.
“The board vote happens after the gala,” Vanessa said. “He will never approve the audit if he cannot remain conscious.”
A distorted male voice answered through the speaker.
“Do not improvise. Use the amount provided.”
Vanessa replied, “The smaller doses are not working quickly enough.”
“They were never meant to kill him.”
“They were meant to make him dependent.”
The man became silent.
Vanessa continued.
“If he collapses in public, the medical proxy activates. I get the files before the auditors.”
The recording ended when Lily entered the nursery.
Vanessa saw the rabbit facing her and turned it toward the wall.
She never discovered the camera.
Rachel isolated the caller’s voice, but the distortion prevented immediate identification.
The footage still established that the gala dose exceeded the amount someone else supplied.
Vanessa had escalated the plan.
Graham watched the recording once.
He refused to watch it again.
“She wanted me dependent,” he signed.
Dr. Foster nodded.
“Progressive hearing loss often forces people to rely on others for communication. Vanessa placed herself between you and everyone else.”
Graham remembered how she praised him for learning sign language while refusing to learn more than a few basic gestures herself.
Lily, a four-year-old child, communicated with him more honestly than his fiancée ever had.
The rabbit camera contained another file.
It showed Vanessa opening Graham’s desk and removing a sealed envelope from his personal attorney.
The envelope concerned a revised prenuptial agreement.
Graham had decided that Vanessa would never receive control of the foundation, even after marriage. He planned to tell her after the audit.
Vanessa read the document before he did.
The poisoning intensified the next day.
Her motive was no longer only protecting stolen money.
She understood that marriage would not grant the authority she expected.
She needed incapacity instead.
Nora’s camera had recorded a final detail.
After Vanessa left the nursery, another person entered.
Only a gloved hand and the sleeve of a formal black jacket appeared. The figure retrieved something from beneath Lily’s bed and examined the rabbit before placing it back.
The hidden camera shifted upward.
A gold cuff link flashed near the lens.
It carried the crest of Graham’s family foundation.
Only three people had received those cuff links.
Graham.
His late father.

And the foundation’s legal counsel.
👉 The rabbit proved Vanessa’s plan, but the gold cuff link connected her unknown adviser to the highest level of Graham’s own charity.
