Chapter 13 - VANESSA’S DOWNFALL
Vanessa entered court expecting to blame Jonathan.
Jonathan entered expecting to blame Adrian.
Neither expected prosecutors to recover the ballroom service-camera footage in full.
The restored recording showed Adrian giving Vanessa the bottle.
It showed him stopping her when she poured too much.
It showed Vanessa waiting until he moved away before adding a second amount from her own pill case.
Her final escalation belonged entirely to her.
She could no longer claim she followed instructions without understanding the danger.
The prosecutor played the rabbit audio next.
“The smaller doses are not working quickly enough,” Vanessa said.
Then the foundation ledgers.
Then Lily’s statement.
Then footage of Vanessa entering Graham’s medical appointments and speaking behind him where he could not read her lips.
Each piece revealed the same method.

Vanessa’s attorney requested a recess.

“I did everything because you were leaving me,” she said.
Graham signed:

“You changed after your hearing went.”
You caused my hearing loss.
“I was trying to keep us together.”
You were trying to make leaving impossible.
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“You needed me.”
I trusted you. That was not the same thing.
The judge ordered her removed after she began shouting at Lily’s recorded image on the courtroom monitor.
“She ruined everything!”
Nora stood.
“No. She told the truth.”
Vanessa was charged with attempted murder, poisoning, financial fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and crimes involving charitable funds.
Jonathan entered a conditional plea requiring full cooperation. His testimony would not erase his role, but it gave investigators access to Adrian’s old accounts and identities.
He revealed one final detail.
Adrian had a storage room beneath the ballroom.
During renovations years earlier, he created a concealed space accessible through the service corridor. Vanessa later used it to store medication and forged records.
Police searched the mansion.
Behind a removable wall, they found bottles, financial ledgers, burner phones, and photographs of Graham at different stages of hearing decline.
One image showed Adrian standing behind Graham during a charity dinner three years earlier.
That was before Vanessa joined the foundation.
Another image showed him placing something inside Graham’s dinner cup.
The date was eighteen months before Graham reported his first symptoms.
Dr. Foster compared Graham’s medical records from that period.
He had experienced unexplained dizziness once, then recovered.
Adrian had tested the method long before recruiting Vanessa.
Vanessa was not the origin.
She was the person who turned an experiment into a sustained assault.
Among the storage-room records was a list titled SUCCESSORS.
Vanessa’s name had been crossed out.
Beneath it were four other names.
All women connected to Graham through business, charity, or former relationships.
