Chapter 7 - NORA’S PART
Nora met Jonathan at the foundation office five months earlier.
Vanessa arranged the meeting and told her it concerned Lily’s school grant.
Jonathan explained that Graham’s physicians wanted him to receive a flavorless nutritional supplement but feared he would forget to take it.
“He made it sound ordinary,” Nora said.
“Why involve you instead of medical staff?” Rachel asked.
“He said Mr. Graham rejected help whenever he knew it came from Vanessa.”
Jonathan gave Nora the bottle inside a sealed pharmacy bag.
The label carried Graham’s name and Dr. Foster’s forged signature.
Nora believed it.
The first eleven doses entered Graham’s food through her hands.
When she became suspicious, she stopped.
But she did not throw away the original bottle.
She hid it inside the base of an old flour container.
Police recovered it from the mansion kitchen.
Laboratory testing matched the compound in Graham’s archived blood and ballroom glass.
Jonathan’s fingerprints appeared beneath the cap.
Vanessa’s appeared on the outside.
Nora’s appeared on the dropper.
The physical chain was complete.
Rachel warned Nora that cooperation did not erase her actions.
“I understand.”
“You administered an unverified substance.”
“I understand.”
“You remained silent after you suspected harm.”
Nora looked through the glass at Lily.
“I know.”
Graham asked to speak with her.
Nora entered his hospital room slowly.
He did not use the interpreter.
He signed.
Why did you not come to me?
Nora’s hands trembled as she answered.
I was afraid you would believe her.
He remembered dismissing the chef and accepting Vanessa’s explanations. Nora’s fear had not come from imagination.
Still, he could not pretend her choices caused no harm.
You helped her at first.
Yes.
You protected Lily later.
Too late.
Graham looked toward the stuffed rabbit beside the child’s chair.
Lily had acted when every adult hesitated.
Nora signed again.
I will accept whatever happens. But please do not take Lily’s school from her.
Graham’s expression tightened.
Vanessa made Nora believe the foundation’s support belonged to her personally. In reality, the grant had been approved by an independent program before Vanessa became director.
She had no lawful authority to cancel it.
She controlled Nora through a threat she could not legally carry out.
Graham told her Lily’s education would remain protected regardless of the criminal investigation.
Nora broke down.
Not from relief alone.
From understanding how completely Vanessa had manipulated her.
Detective Rachel later offered Nora a cooperation agreement. She would testify, surrender all records, and accept responsibility for the initial doses. Prosecutors would consider the coercion and her efforts to preserve evidence.
Nora agreed.
That evening, Graham’s hearing briefly changed.
A nurse dropped a metal tray in the corridor.
He heard a faint impact.
Not clearly.
But enough to make him turn.
Dr. Foster repeated his hearing test.
Some frequencies had begun returning.
The damage might not be permanent.
Graham immediately asked for Lily.
When she entered, he signed:
I heard something.
Lily smiled for the first time since the gala.
Then she pointed at the hospital meal tray.
A sealed cup of tea sat beside Graham’s plate.
The printed label carried the foundation’s logo.
