Chapter 5 - the formula with mark’s initials
Mark admitted developing the original HX-17 activator.
He had been twenty-six, newly married to Sarah, and desperate to prove himself inside the family company.
The formula produced rapid warmth using inexpensive materials. Early laboratory tests remained within safe temperatures.
Then Walter changed one stabilizing ingredient to reduce manufacturing cost.
The packets became less predictable.
“I resigned when I found out,” Mark said.
Sarah stood across from him in the hospital consultation room.
“You stayed silent.”
“My father threatened to sue me for stealing company research.”
“You created it.”
“The patents belonged to ThermaStep.”
“What did Evelyn ask you to do?”
“Give regulators my laboratory notebooks.”
“Did you?”
Mark shook his head.
Walter promised the defective product line had been discontinued.
He showed Mark replacement certificates and safety reviews.
The documents were false.
Mark chose to believe them because exposure would destroy his career and implicate him in the earliest testing.
“You protected yourself,” Sarah said.
“Yes.”
It was the first answer he gave without explanation.
Mark had not prepared Lucy’s slippers.
He had helped create the system that made them possible.
He had also concealed Evelyn’s final call and cooperated with Walter’s plan to provoke Sarah.
Detective Reed asked why Walter said Evelyn was hiding what Mark did.
Mark described an early laboratory accident.
A teenage employee suffered burns during an unapproved after-hours test. Mark had instructed him to wear the prototype before formal safety approval.
The boy recovered, but Walter paid the family for silence.
Evelyn learned about it years later.
She told Mark the archive would include his role.
“She was not protecting me,” Mark said. “She was refusing to remove my name.”
Sarah understood why he withheld the letter and trust information.
If the archive emerged, Mark’s past became public too.
His cooperation with Walter was not loyalty alone.
It was fear.
Lucy listened from the doorway.
No one had realized the nurse brought her back from treatment.
“You knew the slippers could burn?”
Mark turned.
“Not those slippers.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
He lowered himself to her level but did not touch her.
“I knew the chemical had burned someone before.”
“And you let Grandpa give it to me?”
“I believed he was using a safer version.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted it to be true.”
Lucy looked toward Sarah.
“That’s what Mom says when people don’t check.”
Mark closed his eyes.
The family court issued an emergency order.
Walter could not contact Lucy.
Mark’s decision-making authority was temporarily limited while investigators determined his role.
Sarah received sole medical and legal custody.
Mark did not contest the order.
“I won’t make Lucy live with the consequences of my need to stay her father,” he told the judge.
That choice did not erase his failure.
It prevented another one.
Forensic analysts examined the phone recording more closely.
Walter’s camera had captured a reflection in a glass ornament.
Before Lucy entered, another person appeared briefly behind him.
A woman wearing a dark green coat handed Walter the chemical packets.
Walter had not prepared the slippers alone inside the house.
Mark recognized the woman.
Caroline Voss, ThermaStep’s chief medical officer.
Caroline signed the safety report declaring HX-17 harmless.
She also performed the postmortem review after Evelyn’s sauna death.
Police reached her office after midnight.
It had been emptied.
Her computer remained, but every local file had been wiped.
A deleted calendar entry was recovered.
December 24—W.H. family demonstration.
December 26—activate custody data.
December 28—dispose of second child set.
Detective Reed stared at the final entry.
“There was another pair.”
The manufacturing log identified two child-sized prototypes prepared with the same altered packets.
Lucy received size five.
The second set was size three.
A shipping label had already been printed.
