Chapter 6 - the woman who called pain data

Caroline Voss was found at a private airport outside Des Moines.

She had no luggage.

She carried a refrigerated medical case and the second pair of gray slippers.

Federal agents detained her before she boarded a charter plane.

Caroline refused to answer questions until prosecutors showed her Walter’s messages.

He had already blamed her for selecting the chemical concentration.

She laughed once.

“Of course he did.”

Caroline admitted designing the altered packets.

She denied intending permanent injury.

“The exposure needed to produce visible redness and immediate distress.”

“You calculated pain in an eleven-year-old,” the prosecutor said.

“I calculated skin response.”

“Lucy screamed.”

“Pain response is part of skin response.”

Her language stripped the child from the event.

Caroline explained that North Ridge Medical Supply demanded proof that HX-17 failures resulted from family misuse rather than product design.

Walter proposed a demonstration inside Sarah’s home.

The phone would record Sarah’s supposedly chaotic response. Walter would later claim she had stored the slippers improperly or contaminated them with cleaning chemicals.

If the reaction remained mild, the video would support both the merger defense and custody petition.

If it became severe, Walter planned to blame Sarah for tampering.

“What about your son’s slippers?” Detective Reed asked.

Caroline’s composure shifted.

“Caleb has a rare pain-processing condition.”

“So you selected him because he might not react visibly?”

“I needed comparative data.”

“You prepared to expose your own child.”

“To a lower concentration.”

The second pair contained even more HX-17 than Lucy’s.

Caroline had lied to herself as thoroughly as Walter lied to everyone else.

The refrigerated case held blood samples from prior child tests.

Some were labeled only with initials.

One matched Lucy.

Walter had collected blood from her during a “family wellness screening” six months earlier.

Sarah remembered the event.

Caroline hosted it at the Hale estate and told parents the company was supporting childhood nutrition research.

Lucy’s sample was used to predict her inflammatory response.

The Christmas injury had been personalized.

Dr. Price examined the data.

“They knew her skin would react quickly.”

“Could they predict the severity?” Sarah asked.

“Not exactly.”

“They did it anyway.”

“Yes.”

The recovered files contained Caroline’s conversation with Walter the night before Christmas.

Caroline: If Lucy removes them within ten seconds, the footage is useless.

Walter: She won’t. I trained her to keep walking.

Caroline: And Sarah?

Walter: Sarah will panic. Mark will freeze. I know my family.

Walter had built the experiment around everyone’s expected behavior.

Lucy’s obedience.

Sarah’s protectiveness.

Mark’s fear of conflict.

His power came from knowing what each person was likely to do.

The plan failed because Lucy spoke the sentence he had not prepared for.

“He asked if it was burning yet.”

Caroline accepted a cooperation agreement requiring full access to ThermaStep’s medical archive.

She revealed that the original HX-17 records had not been destroyed.

Evelyn copied them into a secure server before her death.

Walter never found the encryption key.

He believed Lucy possessed it unknowingly.

“Where?” Sarah asked.

“Evelyn built it into a Christmas tradition.”

Every year, she gave Lucy a hand-carved wooden ornament marked with a number.

There were eleven ornaments.

Lucy had brought the newest one home after Evelyn’s final Christmas.

Walter searched Sarah’s house twice without finding it.

Lucy remembered where she placed it.

Inside the pocket of an old stocking stored in the attic.

Police recovered the ornament.

A tiny metal drive was hidden beneath its painted base.

The files contained the full child-testing archive.

They also contained video from Evelyn’s sauna.

Not the missing security footage.

A private camera she had installed herself.

The final clip showed Evelyn entering the sauna carrying a prototype unit.

Minutes later, Walter appeared outside the glass door.

He locked it from the hallway.

Then someone stepped beside him.

Mark.
