Chapter 7 - the figure outside the glass
Mark watched the footage in silence.
Evelyn entered the sauna at 7:42 p.m.
Walter followed her to the door but remained outside.
Mark appeared twenty seconds later.
The video had no audio.
Evelyn turned toward them and struck the glass with one palm.
Walter reached for the exterior control panel.
The temperature display climbed.
Mark grabbed his father’s arm.
Walter pushed him away.
Then Mark left the camera frame.
He did not return.
Evelyn continued pounding until steam obscured the lens.
Emergency services were not called for eleven minutes.
Mark had always said he arrived after Walter found her unconscious.
The video proved otherwise.
Sarah could barely speak.
“You left her there.”
“I ran to cut the power.”
“Why didn’t you open the door?”
“My father had the key.”
“The door had an emergency release.”
“He said opening it would trigger an electrical fire.”
“And you believed him?”
“No.”
Mark’s voice broke.
“I was afraid to choose what to do.”
Walter had told him Evelyn was staging another dramatic confrontation. He claimed the prototype was disconnected and the rising display was a sensor error.
Mark ran to the breaker room.
The power controls had been locked.
Instead of calling 911 immediately, he searched for a maintenance key.
By the time he returned, Walter had opened the door and pulled Evelyn out.
“Why lie afterward?” Detective Reed asked.
“Dad said I would be charged too. He said the video system was offline.”
“You watched your mother beg for help.”
“Yes.”
“Did Walter deliberately increase the heat?”
“I saw his hand on the panel. I don’t know what he entered.”
The recovered private camera included sensor data.
Walter had overridden the safety limit.
The prototype inside the room also released HX-17 vapor when heated.
Evelyn suffered thermal injury and chemical exposure.
Her death had not been an accident.
Mark’s failure to act did not make him the person who locked the door.
It made him a witness who helped conceal the killing.
He was arrested for obstruction, evidence suppression, and false statements.
Sarah did not accompany him to the station.
Lucy learned only that her father had lied about Grandma Evelyn’s death.
She asked to speak with him before investigators removed him from the hospital.
The meeting occurred through glass.
“Why didn’t you help her?” Lucy asked.
Mark pressed one hand against the divider.
“I was scared of Grandpa.”
“So was I.”
The difference needed no explanation.
Lucy had screamed.
Mark had remained silent.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“You always say that after Mom finds out.”
Mark looked down.
Lucy continued:
“Tell them everything before they find it.”
He nodded.
That night, Mark gave a complete recorded statement.
He described Walter’s manipulation, the sauna, the company fraud, and the Christmas plan.
He surrendered an old email account Walter believed deleted.
Inside were conversations about Evelyn’s trust challenge.
One message came from Caroline Voss:
Evelyn will not stop unless the heat convinces her she has no control.
Walter replied:
Then let the room teach her.
The murder case against Walter strengthened.
But Mark’s account introduced another person.
After Evelyn collapsed, a private physician arrived before paramedics.
Dr. Henry Sloan pronounced her beyond resuscitation and instructed Mark not to perform CPR.
Sloan later signed the accidental-death report.
He also served as North Ridge Medical Supply’s board chairman.
The company seeking to purchase ThermaStep had helped classify Evelyn’s death before negotiating the merger.
Detective Reed searched Sloan’s home.
He had left the country.
Inside his office, agents found drafts of Walter’s custody petition and a sealed envelope labeled:
IF THE HALE CHILD SURVIVES CHRISTMAS.
The instructions ordered Sloan to request Lucy’s transfer to a private pediatric clinic for “specialized burn treatment.”
The clinic belonged to North Ridge.
Its consent forms granted the facility control over Lucy’s blood, tissue, and pain-response data.
Walter’s custody plan was not only about company shares.
